Another oil question

Apologies to all but I`m a little confused with all the different types available.
I run my mk2a on straight 50 in the summer and 40 in the winter.
Now what i want to know is,

1) should it be mineral or non mineral?

2) Should I use Detergent, mild detergent or non detergent.

Keep it simple, just like me.

Chris... religion, politics and oil... Everyone has their opinion, and none is better than the other.

20W50 is what the factory recommended. I use Valvoline VR1.

Initially true, but the factory reverted back to specifying monograde as the preferred lubricant.

Presumably your Commando is still equipped with its spin-on cartridge filter, so = detergent oil.

3) Is oil the root of all evil ?
