There have been a few posts on here re poor quality, and quality control issues, with new Premiers.

I just wanted to add my two penneth.

I stripped mine down to check them over and found nothing untoward. I fitted them and they work great!

I'm really impressed with the quality and can't fault their functionality. They're a bargain IMHO!

Yep. In about twenty years they'll reach the quality, ease of tuning and reliability of an old Mikuni.

I spent 2 minutes twiddling the idle and pilot screws and job done.

Difficult to imagine easier tuning than that !!

I suppose if you bought the body with no jetting history or recommendations and had to determine it all yourself

but since they have been fitted very successfully to Commandos for decades....you must be joking or trolling

I'll be sure to let you know when that happens, Glen. The only time the float has stuck is when I've had it apart for cleaning or jetting changes, and then a simple tap with a screwdriver handle sorts it. Really, over the years I've had no issues with my Mikuni which was on the bike when I got it nearly 50,000 miles ago. Good fuel consumption, give it a bit of a tweak every couple of months and it's a happy carb. TT, twenty years to tune a Mikuni? How do you figure that?

Yes I do. And still do.

Premiers are on another bike.

I've nowt against fancy carbs and love my FCRs. I've also run CRs and Mikunis in the past on various machines.

This is my first play with Premiers though. And I'm impressed with them. Not sure they'd be good enough on a super duper hot rod, but they seem very fit for purpose for your average Brit IMHO.

Are the 900 series Premiers cast in aluminium alloy yet, like the 600 type I fitted to a friends T160 a year ago. The last time I spoke to the Amal bloke at the Stafford show he said they hadn't yet changed over from Mazak. I agree regarding the quality though, the 600s were very well made with good slide to body fit etc.

Hi Martyn , I had seen that Surrey propose the Premier in aluminium, not only for 600 series but for for 900 too,..........but amal carb don't ! so who is right ?
 
The plot thickens. LP Williams offer them in alloy, but the main reason is weight saving, and they only say they're available in 27mm.

Their site says:

"As a further step in the improvement and development of their carburetters AMAL are now offering special light weight versions of their 600 Series Premier carburetters with the body and float bowl cast in aluminium. The carburetters include all the parts developed by AMAL for the Premier carburetter – hard anodised aluminium throttle valve, ethanol resistant Stay-up float, removable pilot Jet and aluminium needle valve and have been comprehensively tested on the road and have already clocked up several trials successes. Genuine AMAL jets guarantee accuracy and consistency of performance.

The carburetters are available with bore diameters of 27mm and both right-hand and left-hand versions are available. The aluminium carburetter offers a weight reduction of around ¾ lb over the traditional zinc

Trident carbs are 27mm 626 so there's no reason for LPW to offer any other size.

True , but LPW will get you any Triumph Bonnie parts you need no mater what it is even down to a washer and he does carry a fair bit of parts for twins in stock. Always very good service from Phil . He would get your Amal requirements if requested I would think.

Yes, but as the link to the Amal list I posted appears to show, Amal (Burlen) don't seem to be making aluminium 900 series Premiers just yet, so no reason for a triples specialist such as LPW to be offering anything other than the alloy Trident 626 Premiers (which was the point I was trying to make) but no doubt LPW could supply the smaller sizes if required.
 
Nigel, I run them on my race bike 32 mm with 60 mm long inlet trumpets on standard length manifolds, they run a very good.

Has anyone seen or know anything about these Aluminium MK1"s
I would think having them anodized if they arent already maybe something to think about.
I'd like to see some pics of one
 
If you anodise the body you then need to go back to non-anodised slides or you will get galling between the 2 again, this could be very confusing. I have held a 600 alloy concentric and the weight difference is very noticable, maybe a zinc flash plate would be enough to keep the finish looking new.
