Does anyone with closer contact with Amal/Burlen know if they are ever going to produce MK2 carbs again, Particularly the larger size 2000 (36mm, 38mm, and 40mm) and Smoothbore series? I sent them an email, but got no answer.

Ken

They will be at the Classic bike show at the weekend, I will ask the question for you.

RGM are showing a few different MK2s in stock (including 36mm 2000 series) - drop Roger a line, he may be able to make a kit up for you

Thanks, I appreciate that.

Unfortunately, all they have at the moment is the 36 mm in left hand configuration. They also list the 38 mm, also only in left hand configuration, but don't have them in stock. What I'd really like is a pair, left and right handed, in 40 mm to run on the landspeed bike, where I'm currently running a pair of 36 mm MK2s.

Ken, about five years ago I was asking the same question about the 34 mm Smoothbores, keep getting the same answer from Burlen for a couple of those years that production was close . I eventually found 4 x second hand units from a forum member.
If you do get an answer I doubt it will be any different from mine from them.
Good luck
Regards Mike

Hi Ken

Not seen any 40mm for sale. Might have a pair of 38s?

Chris

As far as I know they never made 40mm did they?

IIRC 36 and 38 use the same body, and both can be bored out to 40mm.

I don’t think you can bore smoothbores out though due to the internal throat design.

Yep. They made a 40 mm MK2. I had one for a while on a Yamaha SR500 race engine. They still list them on the web site, model 2040/300 and 2040/301, RH and LH, for four strokes, as well as other models for two strokes and one for alcohol, but never actually have any.

They didn't make the Smoothbores in 40 mm. Max 38 mm.

Didn’t know that Ken, musta been thinking of smoothbores.

The fact remains that a man of your caliber could still bore them out, that should at least widen your search I guess.

Are you allowed modern flat slides?

I dont think Burlen have any intentions of re tooling for the MK2 smoothbore return on investment vs sales do not stack up

i would contact all the old school Amal dealers and see if any one is still holding any NOS

Yes, I can use any sort of carb, or fuel injection. I favor the Amals because they are narrow enough to fit parallel, no angle manifolds needed, and because they are very simple to tune. I've also tried finding anyone selling the FCR 39 or 41 pairs set up for Norton (or SRX/TT600 Yamaha, which have same spacing), but to no avail. I talked to SUDCO, and they don't stock them anymore. They said the minimum order to get them from Keihin is 10 pairs, and they don't see enough demand for them to justify it. Still looking, though. It's not too urgent. Right now I'm using a pair of 36 mm MK2s, and they will do for the first meet in June.

My guess is: unlikely. I guessing that for every MKII they could sell, they could instead sell a 100 MK1s and they are having trouble with them. Amal could sell a lot of MK1 Premier carbs, but they keep having problems getting the bodies. Last week I ordered 8 various sets - they are out of stock on all but two sets. I was lucky enough to get the last two pairs of 626 carbs they had for Triumphs I'm rebuilding. They often don't have any 900-series and very often no Norton-specific 932s. They definitely want to have them in stock, but the lead times are long and they keep getting bodies that are not usable. They do have better stock of non-premier - I assume because nobody wants them now.

I think you are probably right. In a pinch, I think I could do as Nigel suggested, and bore out the 36 mm bodies to 40 mm. I believe the 36, 38 and 40 mm all use the same bodies.

I will send you a pair of MK2's 38mm let me have your address.
All the best Chris
ps my nephew lives in Califonia

Had a word with a guy on the Amal stand and he said that they would need to retool to make the 2000 series carbs and he couldn't say if that was going to happen.

I had to get some bits from Surrey Cycles and they have 5 of the 38mm carbs shown in the picture, I know it say 2 on the paper but the other 3 are back at the shop awaiting reconditioning. https://surreycycles.com/

AMAL MK2 Carbs Availability?

I was just about to mention the above website/shop. It's a normal looking house on an estate that is a veritable Alladins Cave of all things Amal. I live a pleasant 30 min bike ride away, so tend to go there rather than deal remotely. Last visit was to get some bits for TT carbs and some advice.

Oh dang, I was going to offer up 2 (used) 34mm MkII's
When I was looking at them a guy suggested boring them out, not so sure that makes sense as you lose the slide support.

Back in pre-historic times, like the '80s, Jerry Burak at Burak-Bye (sp?) in Los Angeles used to bore out 34 mm MK2s to 36, and fitted chrome plated brass slides in the process. That made for a pair of 36 mm carbs with the smaller body that allowed them to fit a Commando with no carb-to-carb interference. It was a very nice conversion, and those carbs are currently still doing duty on my grandsons Commando. The normal 36 mm MK2s can also be used, but do rub together a bit.
