Is there a procedure for installing the exhaust system on a Norton Roadster? My 850 still has the original balance pipe in the header and I have never had much trouble getting the two rear mufflers to be level with each other. The 74 and 72 that I have do not have the balance pipe and the mufflers have never been level. Is there a trick to putting them on?

Thanks

Bob,
Possibly the right hand pipe is set up to allow the kick lever to clear the pipe / muffler? If these are aftermarket items, they may not be as good a fit as the factory pipes. I suggest the process to align the mufflers is to pick which one is most out of level and remove the diamond plate between the muffler and rubber buffers. The two holes in the plate that mount up to the rubbers can then be ovalised with some careful filing or use of Dremel rotary file. Make sure you extend the holes only in the direction you need to align the mufflers, i.e. slot up means muffler mount will lower.

I had a set of pipes that had a really poor bend. One side had the muffler in close and pointing higher while the other side was vertically lower and pushed outward. I've seen several other Commandos with similar condition. Poor bend design is the reason many of us have had to convert to 850 MkIII kick start arms. The pre MkIII arms just don't clear the right muffler with current available pipes. Like the sign on a local Australian restaurant, "if you don't like the food here, please lower your expectations".
