air cleaner ?

I've got a question for the resto guys:

Is a plastic airbox correct for a 1973 850 commando interstate ?

I purchased my bike appart, the parts i got with the bike was a plastic air box and the correct battery case (yes it fits to the air cleaner ) I thought these airboxes and battery cases where built for the MK3 ! Can i mount it to the bike, or does i get in trouble with other parts ?

You probably have a Mk2A. These came with plastic airbox (similar to but not exactly like the MK3) and blackcap mufflers.

Not only was it used on the MkIII, but the black air box was also fitted to the 850 IA and IIA models, along with the black cap silencers, so it should fit without any problems.

I have these black cap silences! it seems to me that they won't bring a good sound :roll:

They are reasonably quiet (for the mid-1970's at least!).

The most popular replacement silencer/muffler is the peashooter .

Yes i know, only peashooter's rocks :wink: Don't worry that's the first thing i change when i got the state registry for the bike !

There's always straight through blackcaps, tuck in nice and make the sound.

I have drilled holes in the end cap of my blackcaps and the sound is getting a lot "better" and you can "tune it" by the drill hole size.

If I had to buy new silencers I would probably go for the straight through blac caps (keep the original look and get more sound) mentioned by Cash.

Over here most people seem to prefer peashooters and a clamp-on K&N air filter.

Funny you should mention drilling the mufflers. I did that recently to the Termis on my Ducati GT1000, to get the sound I wanted. Some things never change!

Cash, how would you describe the difference in sound quality between the peashooters and straight through blackcaps, going by the premise that the peashooters are as good as it gets? Do you still get that lovely bark as you shut off the throttle with the straight through blackcaps?

The only reason that I ask is that to keep the MK3 looking slightly more standard, I may at some stage in the future consider buying some S/through B/caps.

I'm assuming that you have heard them both? I seem to recall you once saying that you helped design them with / for RGM......or am I hallucinating again? :?:

Yes, and I still run the original pair. These have the same guts as the peashooter, but without the fibreglass stuffing. My brothers when following reckon they sound great especially on over-run. The later type have the standard perf tube and fibre packing and aren't as harsh when on cam, non-the-less sound as good.
