961 is back !

Their comments have been a bit vague but the gist, in my interpretation, is they they will not sell 961 parts that they have not sourced or manufactured. Fair enough. Therefore, all of the parts that fall into that category (sourced or manufactured) should be available for sale. We will not however be able to purchase parts that are unique to our machines. And there’s the rub - we don’t know which parts are no longer used on the new model.

Should be apparent pretty quicky though when we get to see a new model and when their sales numbers increase. Also, if one of our number order a part and it is refused/unavailable that will be a fair indicator. We can open a thread to record these I guess. There are 2000+ of us (prospective customers) out there in the market - once the initiate (legal stake in the ground) period is over I suspect they will become more forthcoming.

Some things just take time,
Remember SLOW is good as they like to say

The bike is actually on sale now tho boyz, so there’s little point in the continued debate about how many they’ll sell and to whom. Just sit back and watch and we’ll soon find out !

Also… something occurred to me… the 961 is now open for ‘expression of interest’… if we all got all our friends and family to ’express interest’ Norton would get the thing sorted and into production for sure !!
Expression of Interest sent last week and reply received stating that they will keep me updated etc. Patience is getting honed, after all I did wait 9 years before taking the 961 plunge and waited 14 months for my CCM!

I saw a number of CCM’s at the Isle of Man this year very nice bit of gear!!!
I’ve got two pretty good looking B50’s which is what the original CCM is based on. B50 good, CCM WOW what a nice looking machine.

Those original BSA based CCMs are iconic. As is reflected in their prices today.

CCM used to be all about real raw hairy chested competition machines. Then they morphed into mildly tamed versions for the road.

The current range is from a different DNA altogether. They don’t float my boat personally, but many do love ‘em.

Back with the 961, rode over the Moors yesterday and, now I seem to have the fueling right, or at least the breathing, the ride is on par with the sorted R3, BSA not Hinckley, or the T140v of my youth. Plenty fast enough for the roads enjoyed, flickable and sure-footed. Still good at a faster pace on the return also.Hope they stick with them!

Talking about how the 961 rides, and noting we don’t know what changes have been made, I’m guessing that this baby will feel/sound identical to our bikes (all pipes considering).

Could Birmingham Norton have engineered out some of the agricultural elements that cause excessive noise? I suspect not - my guess is that they will have addressed reliability issues alone, especially those with potential safety implications. Either way, it’s gonna be really interesting to see what they have and haven’t addressed.

I note that there is no side on pictures shown on the website, for you eagle eyed tech-heads to spy! Maybe they bolted on a supercharger:oops:!!! Ya-neva-no!

I would be pretty disappointed if they haven’t engineered out the horrific clatter.

The quieter bikes need to become at the exhaust end, the more prominent that clatter will get. And conversely, the more noise the clatter makes, the quieter the exhaust note will have to be to compensate.

Surely, Dr Bob and Mr TVS would step in out of personal pride / embarrassment at the prospect of manufacturing such a clattering contraption at their state of the art facility, that would be ironic !

Seriously though, the horrific clatter was one of the things that got me down most about mine, that clatter just didn’t seem right at all. Surely any moving pieces of metal making that kind of noise are actually in the process of destroying each other ?!?

Depending on the accuracy of this photo, the upright bars are using remote cylinder clutch and brake cylinders.

The front turn signals are using spacers like the Domi.

I’ll hope that they are using full LED lighting. Never understood why the SG era didn’t use LED in this day and age.

I would hope, and expect that the real engineers now at Norton will quickly redesign, and resolve the primary clatter from the intermediate gear. It was already explained on the forum how the misalignment of the backlash gear to the driving gear and clutch hub would cause the clatter. Dr Bob's boys should be able to exorcise those gremlins once and for all.

Indeed they should. And we can only hope that the solution can be retrofitted to our old clunkers. Mine quieted down slightly after repairing the clutch basket failure, but still sounds more like a diesel tractor than a proper motorcycle. I've learned to accept it, but any additional improvement would be very welcome.

Oh the mysteries of a hand built bike! I have heard the alarming clatter on some other bikes. Mine for some reason is much quieter. A fact commented on by Gary as he was passing through last year. His was much louder, but then it has done 75K or so and had all sorts of difficulties that I just have’nt experienced.

Maybe that’s in my future, but you’d have to think dealing with it will be easier with Norton operating again and spares (hopefully) available. Like many of our number, I’ve been riding other bikes and limiting my mileage on the Norton. This may prove to have been the right choice, for me anyway.

961 is back !

Any explanation to the pic ?
Yep FE, I am computer illiterate!

#nortonmotorcycles seems to be a random Norton FB site that gathers articles from spurious other FB sites. This image popped up in a regional news article about Norton, dated at the end of 21. The tag line was supposed to be ’spot the differences’.

Have a look at the site, there are other images albeit a few months old.

They seem to be building Norton bikes. Interesting I’m sure, for those believing they had no intention of ever doing so - something about trademark trading or something? I don’t know.
I fancy me one of those new fangled 961’s!!

Steve.

Proof they've addressed the engine noise issues right there..
