961 Commando primary gear noise engineering remedy

Your one of the lucky ones Shayne, some bikes were okay so no need to worry ! What are the Richard Cootes instructions you are referring too ?
Richard Cootes and his dad have made up service instructions with pictures for most of the bikes different sections( oil changes, suspension, gas tank removal, primary case disassembly, etc) and pretty much everything else on the bike. I think he still offers them but not sure.

Be great if these primary mods could be commercially available! I am sure enough owners would make it a viable proposition. I am on my third 961, the last one from TVS, I was hoping for a quieter motor, sadly not! But the attraction of a more 'traditional' bike still leaves the BMW & Suzuki in the garage. Be good to hear what others feel about my suggestion.

May be worth it, if the user can carry out the strip down of their bike to save costs . The actual mods are reasonably straight forward for an modern engineering workshop so I dont think the cost would be too bad. What would be great is if a belt drive could be adapted like the old Norton commandos can retrofit. Wishful thinking for that though !

Well thinking on it, there was a dealership in Germany offering just that! I can't recall the name of the business, but they were authorised dealers at the time and adventurous in engineering solutions to eradicate the noise, I believe they developed a belt primary drive. Although it is no problem to strip the primary side down, can you provide the engineering company's contact details?

Unfortunately a belt drive in the primary wouldn’t really be reliable, as it would be immersed in oil.
A Hy-Vo chain would work if it was only driving the clutch, but as the balance shaft and oil pump need to be driven at the correct speed, I think it would be problematic.
I think the best solution and maybe the easiest, would be an intermediate gear further onto the balance shaft, with a scissor gear each side of it. One for the crankshaft and one for the clutch.
