It's not that we can't ride fast, we just are afraid, at least me. I almost wish I had restored a 500 BSA single. My 750 is a brute and I feel about at the limits of my capabilities and fear. But it sure pulls like nothing else with that wide torque band.

Bill that was too complex a forum site for me to follow what you were pointing at.
Curious more that intending to crash a party. But making plans on future adventures with like kinds.

BEWARE A Combat can quickly over power you into decreasing radius sweepers for handling surprises you may not recover in time. BEWARE. Some discipline required not to run past red line in lower gears as no power drop off to make ya want the hesitation in strong pull to shift. Combats could well be supported to have led to the down fall of Norton with all the warranty claims made all in a bunch. Seriously.
A rev limiter would have prevented most of the damage of addictive Combat G's.

My friend Wes had a Combat in NC, so so power but still blew it up soon out the box, expert rebuilt it and dialed it in. Wes said he'd eat up the 3 cylinder 2 smokes till 100 mph then about match em in top end but over whelmed them in turns and out. Point being Combat come in various states of tune. My 1st happened to have been a good one well attended to - then I went through it d/t all the leaks to find damage in crank and cases that would have ended badly if not caught in time by pure accident to stop annoying leaks, not hot rod it more.

Here's my 1st new edition Combat looking and acting like an 850 and beyond.

Doesn't matter, They are both great.
Buy one, you'll want the other.
Pretty soon you'll have it too.

Any Commando would be a good choice, IMHO.

I have a '68 Commando 750 (first year) & a '75 Mark lll 850 (nearly the last year). I like them both, but they have important differences.

Both have lots of low & high end, but the 850 is better in that regard & runs faster & is smoother at higher speeds.

Both handle well. The 850 has Avon Roadrider tires & handle much better than the 750 with the stock Avons (I am thinking of switching the 750 to Roadriders)

i like the Mark lll electric start (as an old fart) and the left hand shifter (not a big deal but I'll take it)

i would add this: My BMW sat more this summer once I brought the 850 to life.
