Hi,

I purchased a basket case Commando with a 5 speed trans in the stock housing, make unknown. I have the bike running, however it is overshifting 3rd and 4th gears only, the rest are fine as well as the downshifts. Any advise appreciated prior to my pulling it apart. I did replace the cam indexing plunger and spring to no avail.

Cheers.

Its probably a Quaife, made in the UK. Suggest you contact Mick Hemmings, not many in general use so unlikely members here have much experience with them?

You also can find a Schafleitner (Australian) in there but as ML mentioned a Quaife cluster is more likely.
Apart from an extra set of gears and without doubt way better quality it's largely the same as the standard AMC cluster.
So no particular advice in advance, just pull it apart and have a thorough inspection.

I had the same problem with my original (1970) Quaife 5 speed. Dogs on the gears were the problem......but it destroyed itself shortly afterwards. It was 35 years old anyway, so they're not quite as weak as people might think.....35 seasons racing in a 750 commando making 70+bhp is ok in my books. I replaced it with the later needle roller cluster and have had no problems since!
