Worth noting that the Mk2A and Mk 3 had very different installations, primarily due to the difference in side panel and ignition barrel mountings. Breather pipe locations differ too, so while they look similar, they won't fit.
Mk2A ones seem to be getting valuable now, possibly because of all the JPN replicas being built?

Sorry wrong! I have just done it, as I had a spare Airbox from my Mk2A that I sold recently [I had 2 Airboxes] and needed one for the project Mk3 I am currently doing, with some minor mods it does fit- the plastic moulding is the same but you have to blank the holes on the left that supported the ignition switch bracket and add the sidecover support bracket, yes the breather hose fits in a different place and I'm not planning on running the oil separator.

The only thing I would say regarding that box is take the time to make sure the filter is sealed in the groove and at the front panel face.

The airbox change came along with jetting and I think muffler changes. In total this may have impacted horse power. But i agree the airbox alone has the potential to be a better solution than the hamcan version.
 
$728.25 - boy did I ever pay up. $2.32 CDN to the pound in 1974; I know that because they show a credit equivalent in pounds for my $100 CDN deposit. = $1700 CDN - ouch

Ok, that makes sense, 728.75 was pounds not USD. thanks for the feedback
 
I don't think the airbox slows it down. There is a very large filter surface.
One day I'll test with and without airbox connected on dyno hill.

OK - well done you.
Anything can be made to fit by an enterprising owner with engineering skills!
I was making the point that they aren't the same despite being the same base moulding, and without serious work they won't 'just' fit.
Drilling, plugging, pop-riveting and fabbing aren't really in scope for some folks, and more than just 'minor'.
The originality Nazis wouldn't be pleased either ;)
Presumably you already had the upper Dzus bracket to transfer over?
 
Yes the Mk3 came to me in pieces and had a K&N pod type filter, no airbox though I found both mounting brackets in a box of bits, only wish it had the original header pipes as I am having a hell of a job getting a set- the only place I can get a set with a balance pipe is Andover and freight to New Zealand is a 128.67 pounds which equals $248.11 NZ dollars and that is just for freight!

Has anybody used these headers? do they actually fit? both my friend and myself have purchased pipes for our 650's from this vendor and both of us had to heat, re bend and re chrome to make them fit, as we both live in New Zealand it is just to expensive to return a faulty product. Sorry to hijack this thread.
 
I have a set, they match the old OEM set in shape they replaced, they are Wassell so don't expect them to last but they fit but do not know how long they will last.

What about Viking exhausts in NZ ?
 
I fitted a balanced set on my last Mk2A and they had the same part number as the RGM ones. I recall the RHS pipe fitting better than the LHS; they were a bit of a pain.
I wouldn't bother again, and an additional consideration is the reduced exhaust nut engagement into the head due to the need to use collets. - Something which certainly focuses the mind when thinking about applying leverage to line up a poorly fitting downpipe...
