I am still picking at this new to me 74 Norton. It came with a Mk2A / Mk3 air box and the baffles which I assume are to cut down on intake noise. Ordered and received the retaining spring clips from RGM but I will be damned if I can figure out how they work.
I have looked for small holes in the air box that these clips could hook into but there aren't any.

IMHO ... Don't use those baffles/venturi/snorkels! You don't need them, and they restrict the flow of air into the carbs. I might be about to tell you stuff you know, but ... In the carbs, which should be dismantled and cleaned, check the main jets, if they're not marked '260' then get a pair from Amal that are, and fit those. Replace the needle jets anyway, unless you already did, they will be worn. Check that the needles have four rings lightly etched/ground into their top segments, if not get a pair that do, normally the needle clips sit in the middle position. The slides are probably worn, assuming the carb bodies are ok I'd recommend replacing the slides with hard anodised items from Amal. Take the air screws out and probe the pilot jets with a 0.016" [corrected from '1/16" '] or 0.4mm drill or wire, I've got a drill bit secured in a WD40 spray tube, but there are other ways, e.g. ebay item 222564782471. Then spray the pilot circuit thoroughly to remove any debris. Does the bike have the original 'bean can' silencers? I've seen that they're not believed to be restrictive. The 'peashooters' sound much nicer though, they're 'straight through' but not deafeningly so. Also check the fuel heights – Bushman has almost everything you'd want to know about those carbs.

About the slides, my bike had a narrow but deep flat spot with the throttle open just a crack, I fixed it by swapping the standard size 3½ slides for size 3s, and since doing all this myself this summer my bike's better than it's been in 20 years of ownership, thanks to a lot of patient support on this forum – but of course YMMV. Good luck, and HTH!

The carbs are brand new Amal Primers with almost 0 miles on them. So, I won't worry about them except to check the main jet size as you recommend.
I will take your advise and not bother with the snorkels.

Thanks for the advise.

I found this picture of a Mark IIA airbox which has the small holes for the Venturi clips. Apparently Norton omitted these clips somewhere along the production run so they no longer drilled the holes in the airboxes. This is one of a continuing line of changes in the Mark II/IIA production which of course is not reflected in the parts supplement manual.

I learned something today and I hope this is of some help.

Slightly off-topic: There have been reports of brand new Premiers arriving with pilot jets blocked with grease and dirt, and at least one report of incorrect fuel level with the "stay-up" float. Might save yourself some teeth-gnashing, with a little inspection, rather than assuming they're gonna be perfect as received...
It also seems that they need aluminum float needles? Maybe they are supplied this way now?
Stay-up float, that name just kills me!

I just realised that, in my previous post, I wrote '1/16" or 0.4mm' – of course that should've been '0.016 or 0.4mm'! I'll edit that post too, for posterity ...

My air box does not have the holes and I think I will forgo putting the baffles in. Looks like they are more hassle than they are worth.
