Hey Everyone,
Does anyone have an RGM kick start lever going spare? I'm using a reversed gear lever this time and I'm running into clearance problems.

Greg

Everyone who has replaced the kicker with the RGM T160 folding kicker will never go back to the original kicker they fold away so good and are longer for better/easier kicking than the original so chances of finding someone who has a spare one might be a hard task to fine and they aren't cheap to buy but are a good investment, I was lucky they were a lot cheaper when I brought mine over 15 years ago, save the money and buy a new one, that is if RGM has them in stock.

I've got the first Norton proto type in my garage it's fitted with a Suzuki GT550 lever It worked fine. The second is with the T160 lever and is still on my 850. Both use stainless steel boss/splined clamps, one is of 304 the other 316 neither have given any problems at all in fact I reckon they form a better grip round the shaft splines.
The GT550 version is not for sale it's too much hassle right now posting stuff abroad, but why don't you make your own? I made my first one in 1970 for my pre unit Bonnie using a CB750 Honda lever.

It's nice to know that they once had good quality control - it's a different time now! Some are fine, some don't stay folded among other problems.

So you made the knuckle part is that correct, then added the T160 lever ? That'd be a cool project.

I may give this a try. RGM lists the knuckle and I've asked if it has the splines cut but haven't received an answer yet.

Greg - I posted this a while ago. Stopped my RGM kicker arm from flopping. 👍

I've just remembered, well I am 76, the first one I made for a Norton was sold to a chap who was building a Featherbed Imp motored special and I can't remember the make of lever used, however all three were/are fitted with a belleville washer and a detent ball. Belt and braces. I made and fitted the lever currently fitted to my Mk3 850 some 30 years ago. I pretty sure RGM and others sell the T160 retaining spring that looks like it should be easy to retro fit.

I bought one for my Dommie cafe racer, now gone, to clear the rear sets. It didn’t though so I put it on the Commando instead. It looked great. However, it soon started to flop around, lose chrome and I found it difficult to get my foot up high enough to start it sat on the bike so went back to standard. It sold it pretty quickly on Fleabay as RGM no longer produces them.

If anyone in the UK wants a spare rubber for one FOC, they are shorter than stock, let me know as I still have one spare.

Well, mine's just great! Solved floppiness with belleville springs. I intend kicking with it until age stops me. Needs a new rubber every 6 months or so, but bought a few before Anna left.
I would have it re-chromed if necessary, but not needed yet.
I have Matt's excellent electric boot for when I'm too incontinent - or whatever!
(that's our @Dellis excellent tinware there 👍)
Cheers

And still looking mighty fine 👍

The rubber on my RGM is starting to fall apart. Since the RGM rubber is shorter than a stock one, has anybody chopped a stock one?

Yes just cut the stock one down a bit and no problems at all, just cut the inside bit of rubber off and no one will ever know.

Yep - I have, and it doesn't last long. I think the ID of the rubber is slightly different too.

Edit: Just measured a new one of each. The RGM ID is 13.7mm whereas the Stock (AN) is 14.2mm. Doesn't sound much, but makes a difference.
Lengthwise the RGM is 73mm and the stock is 81mm

Excellent info! Think I will try modifying a stock rubber. If it fails because of the larger diameter, I can think of a couple ways to address that.

Well my cut down stock kicker rubber has been on the T160 folding kicker for over 6 years and still good and doesn't try to slide off when kicking.

As the RGM kickstart is borrowed from the T160 then why not fit a T160 rubber 57-2330.

Before I replaced the stock kicker with the T160 kicker I stocked up on new foot peg, GS and kicker rubbers when I was getting bits from RGM so had 2 spare kicker rubbers in my parts cabinet so I used what I had, after many years I still have spare rubbers, always looking ahead in things that do wear, split or break.
