Maiden ride epic tale

Went to the DMV, got the registration taken care of (special interest plate for $112 one time fee, never have to renew) and then buttoned everything up ready for a break in ride. It started ok. I was getting kickback so I retarded it a little. I still don’t like it. Still it started and ran. Then forgot I didn’t put the mirrors on. And then finally I was ready with @Mike T as my wingman. Made it around the block before dying. Felt like an electrical issue. Light still work. Need to check out the ground and the ignition wiring again.

How many miles do I need to do to consider it broken in?

Had to push it home in 85 degree weather. @Mike T offered multiple times to help but I turned him down. Except when it came time to push it up the driveway into the garage and right back into the lift.

Grabbed the Interstate and still went for a ride. Beauty of having a backup bike or three.

That's not good to hear, but hopefully only something simple.

Well ,this is the magnetic sump plug screw fom my friends Commando after 500 miles.
First oil change after engine was rebuild with new pistons and rings.

Change at 50 and then again at 500 and then 1000 and then normally is what I did. Never saw any of that on my mag.

That is a dream for someone with a few old bikes. Here it's $130 each year to register, regardless of mileage put on.
Nice first and third shots. Is that Southern Oregon?

If the rings are sealing good, the plugs and inside of exhaust pipes look good, the cyl AND base fasteners are not loosening, and it's holding valve clearance, you're good! There is no pre-set mileage to determine that, IMO. Many engines go straight on the dyno with zero mileage.

No, it’s $112 only once. Never have to pay anything ever again. Ever.

Not Southern Oregon, it’s 6 miles from my house in wine country just to the southwest of Portland.

Wow, never seen that much swarf on a magnetic plug or sump drain on any vehicle in 500 miles...or 5000!

Seeing that would make me think I had done something seriously wrong clearance-wise and have me tearing the motor back down. I'd be expecting to see piston ring gaps too tight/excessive wear on rings/cylinder walls with obvious scoring on the walls ;)

Here in Nova Scotia to get Vintage plate you need mechanical fitness form completed and signed by red seal bike tech. From then on it is $20 a year for reg. sticker and no 2year safety inspections , the fitness responsibility is on you ... regular bike reg. is $50 per yr with a safety every 2 yrs ..... the Vintage Plate saves no money on insurance ... better than nothing I guess ... Glad to see the Yellow Peril back on the road too !

If certifying this vehicle to be an antique vehicle or special interest vehicle that is not a racing activity vehicle, I certify this vehicle is to be maintained as a collector’s item and used only for exhibitions, parades, club activities and similar functions. I understand it is a crime to operate this vehicle outside of the limitations of the registration provisions as specified in ORS 805.030. Such a crime is a Class D traffic violation and may result in this registration being canceled.

Which is pretty much all you can do with that bike.

I see .... here you promise no more than 5000km per year , but the Registry do not take odometer readings so they can’t/don’t Police the rule .... works same way for cars .. I have yet to surpass the limitation anyway as Norton is Sunday bike , eh

Ok, I have spark back. Not quite sure what it was but my ignition power wire, uh, wasn’t attached. May have just fell off? Not sure.

I really don’t like the wiring loom I made. I’m tempted to do it over. What could possible go wrong?

" How many miles do I need to do to consider it broken in? "

Id keep it below half throttle for the first 500 , try not to get it on the stop in the first 1000
and not held on the stop untill 2000 . Can still keep loosening off till 4 / 5.000
If well maintained etc .
Later you get agro & run it on the stop , and watch out for helicopters .

I ran 30 advance & neede to ' pre flight ' , be serious with the kick start .
The leaning Fwd while kicking wouldnt help .
Locked Advance it'd put you knee into the end off the pull back bars ,
and youd try not to limp for a few days ,
and grit your teeth starting it .

Still , id be rather nervous of running it under advanced , over half revs , anyway . Due to OVERHEATING .

' Break - in / Bedding in , is all about Temperture Control .

My thinking a oversize ( 3/4 ImperiaL gallon of OIL , 1/4 breathing space so one imperial gallon - 160 Ounces needed )
for getting on briskly . Look F-750 & endurance at the racers in their day .

Also synthetic brake fluids much better ( particularly in power steering ) . is that what happened to the paint :p .

Actually looks much better unpainted . UYou could even replicate all the fibreglass in Aluminum / Duralamin .

How are the brakes ? got any bite in the rear , at standstill at least ? .

We have legal pot here ... sold in liquor stores , they selling a strain that helps you concentrate ..... imagine ...
