Instead of starting a new thread I´ll sneak in here, hope it´s ok....What about the crankcases, my -73 -850 looks like it´s painted, a yellow mis-coloration behind the barrels, typically under the carbs. Any specially good paint remover/new paint for this? I´d really wan´t them just bare metal but I guess it won´t last long....
Are you sure that's not fuel staining from the tickler priming? A lot of the paint strippers are worthless these days as a result of the (other) Green meanies. Acetone will remove a lot of paints and stains, but evaporates very quickly so more work is involved in it's use.

Cheers,

cliffa.

Brake kleen gets the tickler potty off the cases, but keep it away from your paint & avoid the green can eco friendly trash.
Remember a Norton is there to help polar bears dump that nasty white fur & live in healthier warmer climes. Do your part to help the critters.

I used this on head and cranckcase, it's still on after a 1000 miles.

Stotfold Engineering do an excellent general bike restoration blog, I discovered it a few weeks back, and remembered he'd done a very comprehensive VHT paint test, including resistance to wd40 and petrol, two solvents likely to be encountered on a set of barrels etc?

Here's the link, the table at the bottom gives a good summary. I have used PJ1 in the past (which did well in the test) and been happy. Local DIY store barbecue paint doesn't last well on my Laverda's 3:1 but I'm happy to just give it a quick spray at the start of the riding season.

Würth saBesto High Temp Spray Paint in Aluminium Colour is what they painted MK3s with in the factory.

It's good stuff - looks good 40 years on and sticks like shit to a blanket.
It fools a lot if people into believing it isn't painted at all.

It is item 892.140027 at the bottom of page 5

That’s a great find / tip.

My head was factory painted but I really had to look hard and close to believe it actually was!

Any recommendations for a source for this in U.K.?

Yes I think it´s fuel stains from the carbs, maybe I wasn´t clear on that. That´s one of the reasons I´d like a fresh paint on the crankcases.

Great tip, I´ll contact them next week and also ask if they have something to remove the existing paint with. There´s a flat black there as well, maybe for the cyl barrel.....
