oil filler cap, WTF ?

I guess that they may all be slightly different, hand built and all. I screw mine in until I meet the very first hint of resistance, as it begins to bottom and leave it there. This is after checking oil level before each ride.

The dipstick does self tighten during the ride however, I can still always remove it by hand without the need for a tool of any kind. Works for me.

Ditto. It's no a drain plug, so it doesn't have to be that tight. As soon as it stops with light finger torque, done. never had an air or splash problem.

For sure.
I never tighten the cap, just screw it down to it's stop lightly.
Never had it back out, as stated - vibration self tightening, and is always easily unscrewed.

Think it through.
Even if the cap did unscrew and back out - the dipstick itself in the tank would prevent the cap/stick from falling out.
It might shake about some if loose, but it's not likely to fall out.
And you would most likely notice the bobbing about cap as soon as it came loose.
Just lightly seat the cap, don't tighten it down.
This is documented Norton 961 quirk #432.:D

OK, so I made a dick of myself today! The technique of lightly hand tightening the dipstick plug I outlined above as my preferred option came back to bite me in the ass!

So it appears that if you screw in the plug firmly, it self tightens further whilst riding, making it difficult to remove without a tool. Conversely, if you do not tigten enough it backs out with vibration whilst riding and sprays oil all over your top yoke and clocks. This happened to me today. DOH!! Oil all over the place. Guess I’ll be tightening and using a tool from now on.

Gotta go, I have a bike to clean!!

Yes, me too Briffan up to this incident. There is clearly a point at which it either tightens when riding, or if initially too loose, backs out.

Just gonna buy one of the tools outlined above and carry it in my jacket.
