well... the time is coming for me to decide what color to paint my 72 commnando..it's currently in temporary dark gray primer...as soon as i get sanny clause off my back i plan to take tank and side panels to local hot rod resto shop for 'real' paint job...colors?

thinking of medium gray metallic with silver logos
or medium gray metallic with black logos
or silver with black logos
or ford ruby red metallic with silver logos
or silver/black logos on tank gloss black side panels with silver logos
i saw the new 650s and really like the grey/silver colors but the ford ruby red pops
thoughts?

My 72 is going to be painted Roman Purple with black logos:).... much later next year...:(

Is the frame black or silver? I think the ford red sounds great!

I'm a sucker for the Ford Ruby Red Metallic. Maybe you can get some matching slippers. Just kidding on that suggestion. I tried to find the Ruby Red last year when I bought my new truck. None available equipped as I wanted. Great color

the hot rod shop guys are masters at matching colors/painting said a job would by $500 a lot but once and done oh I got an emgo tank so that adventure is over...emgo metal much much thicker than 'other' tank ...no leaks..perfect fit..

A wise old biker once told me that there are only 2 colors for a motorcycle.
Black or Red.
And only an idiot would ride a red one.
See my avatar.

My race bike has a red powder coated frame. I picked a color that matched Krylon (rattle can) bright red so if I ever had to touch up...…
I don't know if Krylon is available out of the USA, but same logic would apply with whatever rattle can paint you have available.

Be sure and pressure test that tank before you paint it. Don't ask me how I know.

My ‘71 is going to be Roman Purple metalflake, and the flakes are waiting on my shelf.
I just got a Combat Roadster which would no doubt sell quickly if it was black & gold...
Royal Blue metalflake is currently favourite.
Custom colours are whatever suits the owner best, but the early ‘70s factory colours are just too good to pass in my humble opinion

filled tank full o gas last week and let it sit for several days...bone dry around seams...

ACTUALLY . . . .

Dupli Colour can get a highly presentable durable job . With Patiance .

Hot Tank Tank , Etch Prime . Maybe Surfacer .

Get to the 500 grade paper stage , or better . 320 3M paper .

About TEN ( or twenty ) coats , Then Ditto CLEAR . The Big Cans .

Most irjits are capeable of a bit of masking etc , clear coat to stop edgeing creep . Before Colour .

Excuse the Ring Ding . A URTNOWSKI paint job . WINDY . Has 10.000.000 tapes on U Tube
on how to paint 7 on Control Line F2B Aeroplanes & Painting , them .

His ' BRODAK ' dope ( Nitro cellulose lacquer ) would be also suitable .AND has ' plasticiser ' .

I’m getting my spare interstate bodywork painted in a Mercedes colour called Cavansite blue (I think that’s right).
It’s a slight metallic content and is a really deep dark blue. On cars it looks black from some angles until you realise it’s this lovely deep blue!
I’ve not seen a bike painted with it yet, so can’t say for sure that it’ll turn out as planned.
Intention is to use silver logos and tank stripes with it.

The way to get the effect is to lay down a black basecoat and overcoat with lacquer mixed with 10-20% blue pearlescent.
That works

Ford has the color thing down pretty good....especially the red....that would be my choice...

Would also recommend pressure testing. Had no trouble with my Emgo tank. I tested it in the bathtub (seal tank and look for bubbles as the air inside heats up from the hot water) and also had the paint shop test it again so they were satisfied and there would be no issues later.
