Two questions oil leak & ride height

New guy. 1. I have an oil leak on the left side near thew clutch cover. It doesn't appear to be coming from the gasket even though it ends up dripping from that area. Is it possible that it's coming from the starter & running down to that spot. I notice that it is a little wet under the starter behind the engine.
2. It says that the rear shocks are height adjustable. How?
 
Do you have a trans vent? Tube coming from gearbox oil filler screw to air box?
 
Check the overflow bottle!
Small plastic bottle linked to air box and sits behind the footrest hanger on the LHS.

Two questions oil leak & ride height
 
What year is the bike? So after dissecting and resealing my entire engine (it's ok, it was found to be burning tons of oil anyway), installing a trans vent and the bike still had an oil leak (originally thought to be the starter gasket) it was the starter itself. Detective internal O ring. Changed the starter, no more leak. The person that told me to change the starter and oil leaks being the most commonly misdiagnosed problem on the bike was Matt Capri. Former owner/operator of South Bay Norton. Seems there were quite a few with that O ring problem at one point.
 
+1 on everything that has been said.
- Get trans vent installed asap if not already installed , this will prevent pressure build up in trans/primary.
- oil on top of crankcase under starter is from the starter or starter gasket , usually does not migrate lower , stays on top.
- do you have a airbox drain bottle ? or a plugged or open drain line ?
- check tightness of screws and leaks from sump plate , primary cover , countershaft sprocket area , oil migrates over.
- use a trouble light and find the oil trail after your ride and pin point it. Clean engine before you ride.
- 961 engine will be oil tight with no leaks , find and fix.
- not all starters are leak free in the past. Norton now deliver LEAK-FREE starters. Ebay starters may leak (I know now)
- Buy Genuine Norton Starters they are prepped and sealed now ..

- Rear Shocks , At the bottom of the rear shocks there are lock nuts , these must be slackened and the bottom shock eye turned out (unscrewed) to lengthen. If you want to shorten the shock you may be out of luck because they come from Norton at shortest setting . (Ask me how i Know) . This is all in the service manual which hopefully you have now.

Can someone please include a picture of the trans vent. I have had the oil in airbox fix fitted, but not the trans vent.

I missread some of this. So this leak is mostly likely from the trans not the engine! Wow. Makes sense now! So this kit is for the transmission. Duh. Gotta read the whole service manual.
Thanks again. Boy do I feel dumb. After riding 47 years + actually working on bikes before!!
