tri spark

Back when, I bought a new AAU and had the bob weights hard chromed - no problem for years. When I sold that bike, that hard chromed AAU went with it.

The mechanical AAU may or may not have an ideal advance curve, I can't say with any gusto, but so what? after being jerked around by a loose timing chain and getting the equivalent of a 7.1 shock each time the cam lobes load and unload the cam, and, after nearly 40+ years of being exposed to a zillion heat cycles, moisture and little to no lubrication, never mind little to no real parts support, why are we having this asinine discussion?:

And. who really rides with the tack below 3000 RPM, where the ISOs start doing their part? And, who can honestly say they can actually feel the difference between and EI, and even a new AAU ( which are as plentiful as hens teeth); you are really splitting hairs even with a dyno. Also, as mentioned earlier, do you really want to set your points/timing every 500 miles, or less, to get that elusive, unmeasurable extra 5 ergs of power, that no real person can actually feel?

I'd venture that unless you are the type of person that brings a gun to a knife fight even a highly programmable EI on a street motorcycle is ridiculous, if you race and need to be assured that you have removed all mechanical excuses, then I get that. If you are genuinely concerned about loosing those precious 5 ergs BELOW 3k rpm, then lose 5 pounds!

The way I see EIs is that you have 2 choices: 1) EIs with idle stabilization, and 2) those EIs without that feature. If you enjoy adding complexity and creating more issue that you are solving (for street riding), then by all means shell out huge sums of money and purchase a programmable unit, so make that choice, purchase the unit that fits your budget (or ego), install, time, go worry about something else.

I've got bad old Boyer and the bike starts right up , idles fine and runs great. Haven't touched it since I bought the bike 15 years ago.
Last year it pulled up the 7 mile Salmo Creston climb(7-8% ) at just under the ton. Would points or a fancy EI get it up there any faster?

Ancient Boyer idle-

Would idle stabilization improve this?
It seems rock solid to me but perhaps it could be better.

i bought a Tri-spark to replace the old boyer unit on my commando, it instantly cured a couple of problems, then new premiers sort the rest (well until the rod snapped anyway)
However, there was also a boyer in my triumph T100 (and still is for that matter) that i plan to replace with points and bob weights, purely because every problem that ive had seems to point to this mysterious box.

the old man has points in his 74 Bonnie and aside from the current issue of the unit pretty much seizing hasn't had any issues. (we are currently replacing this unit with the one meant for my T100) but i think in the future this will be converted to tri-spark too

I don’t think idle stabilisation stabilises a stable idle Glen...!

It’s more to help in stop / start traffic etc I believe, where sometimes an idle can fail when stopping at lights or similar.

I’m guessing yours would not be improved though.

Nothing wrong with the old Boyar's I had mine in my Norton for over 30 years without even touching it, the bike started and ran great idled well, then I went for a Joe Hunt maggie, I thought the Boyar was great but now the bike is even better with the JH, starts on half a swing on the kicker first time every time, runs great from low revs to full revs and the idle is even smoother than the old Boyar and the best thing no need for a battery and other major electrices that a Norton need to run but of course we will get the same thing from people, it don't have auto advance, it looks ugly sticking out the side, but that of course comes from people who have never had or experience a JH maggie and the best thing about the JH is they put out such a big spark.
I love my JH its one of the best things I have spent money on.

I had similar luck for a long time with the old Boyer, but then she started to kick me back and finally hurt my ankle pretty badly.
Fitted the Pazon Altair and feel much more comfortable sitting in traffic at stoplights and such.

For me it's all about reliability
And you can take my Lucas Rita when you can pry it from my cold dead hand's

My first EI was a Lucas Rita way back in 1979 it lasted just over 12 months before it sh.. itself replaced it with the Boya it lasted 30 years and as far as I know its still being used in my mate's old Norton when he sold it on, I think it only kicked me back twice in all the time I had it.

Yes I also have had good service from a Boyer unit
Maybe 15years plus but it started kicking back despite a fully charged battery

Have you tryed retarding it ever so sligthy sometimes the tapper on the pick up slips, but I say you would have looked at that.

Yep that was the first thing I checked
I retarded it a couple of times but kickbacks were random ,I checked the whole system, iincluding adding a dedicated power supply
The bike was fine once started but I have plants facitis in my foot so it would cripple me for days
I couldn't risk it any longer
