[Edit] Sorry I should have read what you said about polarity (or did you edit your message?)

The positive wire (red?) can be connected to earth/ground either by the frame, or any red harness wire that connects to earth/ground, or it can also be connected direct to the battery positive terminal.

The negative reg/rec wire should then be connected to the battery negative wire (brown/blue?), at any point between the battery and the ignition switch so that it is protected by the main fuse, if an ammeter is fitted (pre '71 model?) then it's probably better to connect to the battery wire at a point between the ammeter and the Ign/Sw?

hi lab
the polarity is still positive earth
if i cut the negative wire that leads to the ignition between the fuse and the ignition and join the rectifier wire here will this produce the desired results, ie the battery will charge and my halogen headlight will work without draining the battery?

Yes you can connect anywhere along that wire.

Or you could connect the reg/rec wire to the old rectifier connection?

That's in the lap of the electrical gods!

If it is all connected properly and everything is working as it should, then it ought to have the desired effect?

lab you are a godsend
thanks for your help
will let you know how it goes
thanks again
