Will a 750 go into an 850?

G'day posters
I recently bought a 74 Mk2 850 with a hole in the cases from a thrown rod. I can access a 71 or 72 rebuilt 750 'short' engine for a very good price. My question is can I do simple swap or are there major differences between the engines that will prevent the transplant? If the differences are minor, any advice would be welcome.
Regards and a happy New Year

aside from carbs and displacment, the same. internal parts are different, but if it's whole, dosn't matter.

What's a "short" engine? Like bwolfie said, the complete engine change is pretty easy. Just little things like breather tube diffferences. If the 750 isn't complete, it's a different story. 750 and 850 heads have different head bolt patterns, and don't interchange without a lot of machine work. You can put an 850 top end (pistons, cylinders, head) on 750 cases, but the balance factor wil be off due to the heavier 850 pistons.

I'm pretty sure you can easily convert an 850 to 750 but not the other way round. I think its the crankcase mouth that's smaller and needs opened out.

Take care,

Here's an entry of mine from a while back on crankcase/barrel/piston/head configurations using components available to me at the time. I've since bought 750 and 850 bikes and a nearly complete 750 engine--my engine work since this original message has confirmed the relative merits outlined below:

Many thanks to Rip et al. for empirical, compelling evidence making the argument for using 850 cases where feasible. If I wanted to leave the 850 bottom end undisturbed I could probably use my almost clapped-out spare 750 barrel with .060" or .080" oversize forged pistons to compensate somewhat for the heavier 850 crank in terms of the balance factor. Potential combinations that would make sense for me:

1. 750 crank and Combat cam in original 750 cases wth Combat head (on bike at present)

2. 850 crank and standard cam in 850 cases with RH10 850 head (current spare engine)

3. 850 crank and Combat cam in 850 cases with skimmed-down RH4 850 head (and cam tunnel opened up)

4. 850 or 750 crank and Combat cam in 850 cases with bored-out 750 barrel, heavier pistons and pins and Combat or spare 750 head

All I need is a second Combat cam and oversize pistons to cobble together any of the above configurations over a long weekend. If someone has experience running 750 barrels on 850 cases please let me know. Given that the Combat bottom end has been practically bulletproof since I put in Superblends in '72, the current inventory may just suffice for the rest of my miserable little life. Thanks again to everyone who weighed in on this.

Tim,
I'm sure the 750 top end will fit straight on to an 850. but not the other way round.

I've put several 850 top ends on 750 cases, but it's been quite a few years ago. The only case mod I recall is fitting thread inserts into the case for the through bolts. You don't have to fit them, but the factory did, so I thought it was a good idea. I don't think I had to bore the case mouths out, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the advice guys. I can now get a complete 750 engine together without the gearbox. So I'm hoping that I can just take the 850 out and bolt the 750 into its place using the 850s gearbox and primary without any alterations. I'll keep you posted with the progress. From the posts so far and from the way it looks I'm assuming it really will be as simple as it looks. Notwithstanding Murphy's law of course.
Cheers
