Which shock absorbers?

Well decision made. I asked a question at about 2100 tonight of NJB and got an answer within 20 minutes. And so I’ve got a pair of their exposed spring units coming. My forks by the way are a totally new set from AN as the old ones need to be totally refurbished - now that’s a job for another time.

I would be keen to hear some feed back as to how they perform as I am considering a set for the Mk3 I am building.

I have Koni's they perform better than the originals . However, I don't like the look of the black springs.

I had some very nice looking Girling replicas on my T140 (unsure of the make). They looked great. Performance was shocking!

Caveat emptor.

Shocks are on my list of parts to get ....so many the choose from;)
I'm toying with the NJB units, but slightly ahead are Falcon as they can offer different spring ratings
Please let us know what you think of the ride once fitted And road tested...
Did you go for standard length units?

I had a pair of Hagons on my 850, fitted by the previous owner. Not a lot of milage on them so I kept them on the bike. They seemed ok until I went to Spa and found an odd, rather disconcerting sort of roll or wallow in some of the faster corners.
The following year, I had a set of Falcons. No major changes to the suspension otherwise, but it was _much_ better - almost as good as my bevel Ducati (which is really superb there, the long fast corners really suit the bike).

The lesson was that good suspension is worth paying for :)

Maxton are probably the best, but as Fast Eddie found out, once you have them on the rear, you really need them on the front as well, and it does get a bit pricey.....

They could be Hagons! If they were old then. . . .

They’re not Hagons, and they’re not old !

Bike was restored in 2018 and they’re the ‘current’ Girling replicas being sold by various outlets.

They look good and they’re cheap.

They just don’t work well...

Please stop with all the positive talk of Maxtons.

I bought a new set of IKON 7610 a few years ago, and they are good. Way better than the Hagons I had, which were way better than the Girlings.

But no Ohlins.

All this talk of Maxton. Not good during lockdown Not good at all. Wont do.

Please stop.

I.
Cant.
Handle.
It.

LOL

I don't want to go racing, track days or Sunday mornings out scratching with the lads...
I appreciate that Maxtons are the best but they also come with a high price tag... I just want a decent ride at a middle of the road price

NJB have a full range of springs, they will recommend a rating but also fit what you ask for, they will fit 2 springs if asked as well for progressive spring rate. They are not a sophisticated as the Falcon's in adjustable damping but that is reflected in the price.

I’ll be happy enough if they just keep the bike upright and allow a mild bend swinging - if we ever get allowed out to ride again. I’m not looking for anything too sporting, I’ve got the Busa and Blackbird if I want that.

Perhaps because Falcon are thinking race use, lightweight jockey and no pillion?

IIRC I had 90lbs springs on my Falcons and they were too light for my 14.5 stone.

it will be interesting what the new Girling range performs like when it arrives later this year

clearly Old Brits and A/N are well thought of suppliers of parts forCommandos, BUT whose shocks do they sell? They don’t manufacture shocks. I’d want to know that so as to compare with other market sources before blindly buying
i somewhat understand you're saying, but with few exceptions, i have better luck with anything replacement by going straight to AN for parts (or AN thru old britts). i'm trying to keep my 74 somewhat original and period correct - i do not race and no track time - at my age, happy with an occasional pleasure ride. as for shocks, if AN states they are the closest thing to OE (assuming they mean form, fit, and function), for the most part, that's good enough for me. as Landspeedracer said, "happy enough if they just keep the bike upright...." ;)
