Where do I get a crankshaft pinion puller

Does anyone know where I can purchase the cheapest usable crankshaft pinion puller for a 74 ---850 commando?? Is there another way to safely pull the pinion without this special puller????--Thanks

You might try Ebay. Or, perhaps grinding the legs down on a small, three-jaw puller might work. Lastly, you could pry it off, but you'll damage the gear and that three-lobed plate, but you could replace them?

By the way, I'm visiting my parents in Fort Worth for Christmas, would you be interested in meeting for a quick beer?

Mark,
This is one time I would recommend using the factory tool. Old Britts will rent one for $30. If you don't see a need for it more than once this is better than buying. If you might be using it again, then your better off buying one.

Alternatively, you might want to give Keith Martin a call at RPM cycle/Big D. He probably has the puller and would lend/rent it or pull the pinion for you if brought the bike over.

Pinion Puller

Thanks for the advise guys. I think I'll bring the crankcase by Big D/RPM Cycle. Or I may cough up the $70.00 to buy one from Map or old Britts. I do have another commando to restore. By the way --Thanks Jason. Let me know when you are in Fort Worth and maybe we can talk shop over a beer or two at a local English Pub called the Bull & Bush on Montgomery Street close to Downtown Fort Worth. Isn't this the same puller that can be used on Triumph and BSA timing pinions? If you have other bikes to work on, might be worth buying one. Price at Old Britts (90 bucks) seems high for a simple tool like this. Anyone found a cheaper source?

Both M.A.P. and Walridge sell that puller for abot 65 bucks.

Pinion Puller

How do you use two old butter knives to remove the pinion gear. Do you use them as pry bars simultaneously or do you have a special way??? Seems dangerous to me??
