My choice of sealer for the crankcases was Loctite 518. I chose it for its flexibility. I did notice that excess sealer that squeezes out of the joints does not set, as concours said. I see that as a good thing.
Because my cases had been broken and welded up, I spent a lot of time making the surfaces fit together as well as I possibly could. I used bearing blue to check how well they mated. I scraped some high points down, and I built some low points up with JB weld.
When I got them as good as I could with the bearing blue, I found that I could still detect very small gaps by shining a strong light through the joints. I used this method to improve the fit even more.
For places where gaskets are used, my preference is to make the mating faces as good as possible and only use grease on the gasket.
