Next job on mission start that Commando is to fit the Pazon surefire ignition.

This might seem like a stupid question but is there any reason not to mount the ignition module as far back as I can towards the battery box? I'm looking where to put it and it's all a bit cramped around the coil area and having a twin spark coil I reckon it'll be pretty hot close to the coil which can't be the best place for an ignition module.

Hi Andy, you can put it anywhere except An enclosed space with no air flow. OK, not on the hot parts. Many good placements don't seem available because you can't drill holes. I used industrial strength Velcro to mount electrical components like rectifiers/ regulators and blinker relays in the battery box area. Add a zip tie for good measure.
Good luck :D

Wrap it in dense foam and wire tie it in between the tube behind the stem and above and just back of the coils. This is good airflow and the dense foam will surely protect it. It's a small box and will fit without issue.

Sorry Pete, but wrapping the ignition module in dense foam is NOT a good idea. These units dissipate several Watts, and wrapping them in an insulator defeats the air-flow requirement. If you decide to mount the device on, say, a horizontal frame tube, then a layer of foam between the tube and the module might do some good in dampening some higher-frequency vibrations. Just be sure that the remaining 5 sides of the module can radiate directly to the air.

I tie wrapped my Pazon Altair unit to the main tube just to the rear of the battery. Used a 10mm slab of high density foam between the frame and the unit, and it fits fine with no slipping around. Plenty airflow around it, and keeps it out of the crap at the front of the bike. The wire length that comes with the Pazon is about 1 metre, so you can afford to be quite creative about where you put it :)

Here's where my Pazon is mounted on my Commando.
I fabbed up some flat 1/16" aluminum stock for a mounting strap to keep it secure.

You can mount the ignition modules any where ya like even foamed wrapped if not close to engine heat. They only run like 5 watts maxium so not much heat to be rid of our they come with fins and heat sink plates like the rectifier regulators do Lucas or modern potted versions. Further away from plugs just means longer HT to route leads for a tad more resistance to over come to spark which raises spark voltage some and slightly part a degree retards spark. Its an art to hide unattractive vital components so appreciate those who do.

Although I think it's more like 60 watts, I have never had issue with my location over the coils. It's not really wrapped in foam but the foam wire tied between it ahd the frame as to cushion.

Opps pete I meant 5 amp not watts which @ 12v comes out about 60 watts at maxim rpms as ya say. it makes so much sense to me to mount brain boxes above coil pack thats how I did mine but there is very little sense in motorcycling so why not mount em anywhere ya like though I and others prefer these places essentially out of sight. Most of us mount them exactly as you describe.

Because I've got 34mm Concentrics on the bike and have fitted a single K&N filter on them theres a bit of a space above and behind the filter which shouldn't suffer from excessive heat and certainly isn't going to get wet so that's where the module is now sitting.

I've got some self adhesive foam pads which I'll put on all sides of the module to prevent any damage but not fully enclose it so it should stay relatively cool while being safe from any long term damage caused by vibration. Right now the module is just sitting there and isn't retained at all but cable ties will be doing the job of holding it in place once I motivate myself enough to go back to the workshop.

Thanks for the re-assurances, it's always nice to know you're not repeating someone elses earlier mistakes.

here here. glad someone is using their brains.

Closer to coil than maybe you want but the Pazon sits like this on mine, tie wrap thru self adhesive plastic mount.............
