I'm rebuilding a 1972 -750 Commando and my headlamp has an amp meter with a toggle Switch and a green and amber "warning? light. What do these lights indicate and do I potentially have the wrong headlamp cause I bought a harness and it has 3 warning lights on it. Any help would be great. Thanks.

You should have a headlamp shell with the three idiot lights and a two position toggle switch for the 72. The amp meter was for earlier models. Red for voltage, Green for hi/lo beam, Yellow for marker /blinker signal light.
Cheers,
Thomas

Ah. So I guess my headlamp is from an earlier model.

Is it unheard of to drill one more hole and keep the amp meter? Will I get murdered by the purists. Hahahah

headlamp shells are available. Try Walridge Motors. Andre what part of the globe do you live in? I could direct you in the North American zone.

Thomas

Yup you have an earlier model setup. Use the new harness, drill a hole for the 3rd and hook up the meter to use it I would do.

Is the ammeter wiring simply positive to ground. I would imagine so?

No.

A voltmeter would connect to 'ground'. An ammeter goes between battery(-) and the ignition switch (see manual link, pre-'71 wiring diagram, section J, fig. J9).

http://www.classicbike.biz/Norton/Repair/70up_Commando/70upCommando.pdf
pdf p.176.

Note that the charge wire from the rectifier (NW on the pre-'71 diagram) is connected to the ignition switch side of the ammeter, also the horn is wired so its current doesn't pass across the ammeter.

Or the wiring harness could be from a later model. My 74 has the three lamps and no ammeter. I assume that the RED light and assimilator module replaced the ammeter. Does your Norton have the assimilater can? If so the wiring harness is correct and the headlamp wrong.
