Victor with a pazon problem

I put a Pazon in a Victor and it's doing peculiar things. I've installed plenty of Pazon and Boyer ignitions. I static timed it as usual, 30 degrees, red dot in the window.

When it fired up the timing was way out. It started easily and idled but choked when I opened the throttle. As I tried to time it with a timing light it ran worse as the two timing marks tried to align. I double checked the rotor mark and the pin in the primary case. They are accurate. So what gives? I pulled the amal apart and replaced the needle jet. Also tried the needle in all three positions.
 
Needle position has nothing to do with the idle or coming off idle, you need to concentrate on the pilot jet and the pilot air and fuel galleries. Use your #78 drill first and go from there.
 
It starts fairly easily so I am inclined not to do a full cleaning of the passageways...if that's the problem then it's time to buy a new one. The real question is why the timing marks are so far off and when I try to align them it runs much worse. It also seemed not to advance as much as I'm used to. Using a timing light.

Are the timing marks on the alternator rotor definitely correct?
 
Yes, I checked them yesterday. I have had only one instance where the marks were off and that was in 1983, 40 years ago...but I always check.
The narrow advance range could also be a clue
 
According to Mr. Ratio if there is a "V" mark on the cam gear I should ignore any other mark. I am very certain I used the "V" mark but has anyone used the wrong mark? What happened?
 
There's more than one "Victor".

Pazon have made some units with the wires crossed, so retard instead of advance.
So is the cure to connect black-white to black-yellow?

If it is actually advancing then probably not.

BSA factory manual 00-4188:
"In the case of the B25 and B50, however, the dash must be ignored* and the marks aligned as in Fig. B28. If the gears are aligned dash to dash the valve timing will be advanced by two teeth, causing the inlet valve to foul the piston."
