I am trying to align the marks on the cam gear and the crank...should be easy if the resembled anything in the service manual.
The dash on the crank gear is so faint that it could be a random scratch.
The mark on the cam gear is NOT a dot...it is two marks two teeth apart. One is a faint dash the other is a V. Neither one lines up on the money such as a mark on a tooth lining up with a mark in the valley of the other gear. any ideas?

The spacers in the transmission do not agree with the numbers in the book. Instinct tells me to reassemble as I found it. What am I looking for when choosing the correct shim?

Best answer will be found in The Rupert Ratio unit single manual volume 1. A must have for unit singles owners.
In short, "If the 'V' is present it must be used in preference to the dash." and "The timing mark on the crankshaft 'timing' pinion is often obscured by the tab washer."
Rupert also gives advice how to address vague or missing marks. Also list of opening and closing for different cams used by BSA. He also writes about cam end float.

OK...I was going to put it on the dash. I need to buy this book from BRITISH UNIT SINGLES
