G Day Chaps,

Venhill (teflon lined) clutch cables are now as cheap as an o/e clutch cable:

http://www.venhill.co.uk/Motorcycle_Hos ... CABLE.html

£11.42 inc the dreaded.

Norvil now has various clutch 'nylon lined' clutch cables at £11-13 & VAT = £15-17-ish plus p&p

RGM UK bars £9.99 plus the dreaded= £12 & p&p

What I want to know is are Venhill cables any good and should I buy one?

I like the idea of a smoother pull, but not having to lubricate it is at least as good!

They work for me, others may have a different view.

Venhill cable are as top notch. Their reputation depends on the fact that this is their speciality. Clutch, throttle, speedo, tach and more......all great stuff.

Shipping is super fast to US.

Even though they are lined, they still suggest lubing with 3 in 1 oil.

I would lube them with Dri-Lube or DuPont Teflon with Moly. Doesn't collect the dirt like oil does.

Much obliged for your input gents.

I must admit I can't find anything on their website about it, but I am fairly sure i have read elsewhere that it was a no no to lubricate them at all- something to do with oil/other lubes destroying the inner lining?

Venhill Document
"MAINTENANCE
Cable maintenance is essential to prolong the life of the cable and maintain the operation of the cable.

• Road bikes – At the beginning and end of the summer, remove the cables and flush through with
WD40. Once clean, lubricate the cable with a light 3 in 1 general purpose oil and lubricate nipples
where required with Copper grease. Note barrel nipples must be free to rotate in the lever blade.

Do not use heavy engine oils, chain lubricants or grease to lubricate cables as this will attract dirt,
increase cable wear and reduce the operation of the cable. Remember: Cables are a service item and
should be replaced at regular intervals. If you are in any doubt about replacing or installing a cable
please consult you’re nearest qualified motorcycle mechanic."

I like the Venhil clutch cable very much. Do they make throttle cables for Norton's too?

Ahhh, thanks mate!

My nearest (un)qualified mechanic is me  Good tip about lubricating the nipples at either end with copper grease. How many of us do that at the h/bar?

Love to hear from anyone wlse about the quality of Venhills. They sound first rate.

Generally the best you can buy. I've been using Venhill cables for years.

Venhill has USA rep in Austin TX with an ebay presence -- venhilldirect. Prices are very good. They also seem to have the tach cable with the metal spiral sheath up from the tach drive like it came with.

I've had a Venhill clutch cable for 3-4 thousand miles now and still works great. I don't think I've maintained it all that well either.

Dont think they do Norton throttle cables in the slippery stuff but they do the loose parts which I used to make my own. With the nylon liner they are an improvement on std. The clutch cable is fantastic but don't ever let it get soaked. Mine was drenched a few years ago and when it dried out it was impossible to operate. A flush and light oiling got it back to normal and has done 25,000 miles now.

my experience - Venhill = great service, helpfull people, fast shipping to the USA, VERY competitive prices and a high quality product. LAB put me on to them a while back, and I thank him for it every time I use my clutch.
Venhill seems to operate how business used to - when they cared about their product and reputation more than making the extra couple of pennies selling crap.

So are the "featherlight" cables the lined ones?

http://www.venhill.co.uk/Motorcycle_Hoses_and_Cables
Our Featherlight brake, clutch and throttle cables are developed from OEM items, to offer improved performance, durability, control and feel and feature: marine-grade stainless steel inner wire, flat wound steel conduit and ‘Bird-caging’ for strength and durability; a low-friction Teflon liner for a lighter action; and PVC jacketing for protection.

Got my Venhill speedo cable today. Took 5 days because the were back ordered. Remarkable speed of delivery.
These ends are awesome. The cable is really heavy duty yet so supple.

So, do you guys notice an easier clutch pull with these cables? After about 15 mins of riding on my combat my fingers and hands becomes numb from pulling my clutch lever with what I can only assume is an OEM clutch cable.

Been doing that for years except with high melting point grease, from Castrol.
The only drawback of nylon lined inner cables is that if the inner nylon liner splits, its dustbin time…….

Not necessarily so. Mine got rubbed through on the outer and inner where it sits between oiltank and batt tray. It then got a severe drenching from flooded roads and next day was impossible to operate. I removed it and thinking it was toast and only gave it a quick flush with WD40 to get a ride in. A piece of heat sink material covers the split. That was 5 years ago and its still easy to operate with a total of 30,000 miles on it, half of that since the damage.........impressed.
