It has been my experience that with a nice film of oil on everything, including my gauges, that I can still get the .007 in there, the difference is that it is no longer a friction fit. You have to feel when you are using the gauge to compress the spring a tiny bit. "Go-No Go" becomes a function of how much force you can exert on a very thin strip of metal!

Thanks. I actually wiped all the oil off the feeler guages I bought to avoid any extra lubrication due to the oil.
 
Years ago I bought some extra long .008" and .010" individual feeler gauges (Combat). These are a lot easier to work with and better "feel" than the folded up all in one type. They are about 12" long. I used a red paint pen to mark the size on them in later years because it became hard to read the sizes printed on them. McMaster-Carr still has them and does sell them individually.
