...or you've been blasting around on it for a while (and can't remember when/if you looked at the gearbox) it is cheap insurance to pull the box down and make sure all the bushes and bearings and shafts are in spec. It beats walking!
Walking, or being smeared all over the highway. Most of my traveling around here is over 50 mph, with a big chunk of that at 65 in heavy traffic. At over 17,000 miles on the clock, this is the winter for gearbox scrutiny. Besides, the head has to come off for bad exhaust threads. Gwallen, I'm so glad to hear you survived yours unscathed!

Thanks Nathan, Good luck with your rebuild. It's the first time for me also.

I bought some of that Red line Shockproof transmission oil to go in my Norton Rotary then sold the bike (error) How suitable is that oil to drop into my Commando? It was expensive stuff. I don't think my Brothers Sportster warrants anything that expensive.

It should be fine.
I currently have "Lightweight" (blue) in my Commando's gearbox, I think other members also use "Heavy" (red).

Yes ,I use heavy Red. I really like the way it sticks to everything ,it even coats the springs and shifter parts and nuts etc. between the inner and outer covers preventing rust from condensation. Pricey but worth it for the Commando gearbox.

Weren't the Portuguese layshaft bearings only for a small window of time?

Yes, they were, however, any standard 6203 metal (steel or brass) cage bearing can (and probably will) break up (eventually).
