Getting ready to reassemble my trans with new bearings. Is retaining compound needed/advisable for the inner race to layshaft fit? :?: Test fit was hand assy. OK with shaft and race at room temp.

A new/good shaft is a press fit. A softer shaft that has been overloaded by heavy loading will eat up the shaft. If the bearing slips on and off by hand then the shaft is NG...

Although... both John Hudson and Mick Hemmings in their respective NOC gearbox rebuild videos stipulate that the layshaft should be a sliding fit in the bearing and should not be a tight fit, if it is tight then the shaft should be eased down with Emery cloth. :)

I think that removing metal from a press fit is a bad idea. Once it is able to move it will slowly wear.

But I would also not replace the shaft if it was a sliding fit. I would use a little JB weld or Locktite bearing mount.

If there is perceptible play I would replace it. Jim

Yes for economy just try the JBW but likely if just sane running around would last a long time unless snicking race shifts at WOT hi rpm shock loads. it'd be pretty simple cheap to copper plate the end and mill to size, as done so so commonly on electric motors to combustion engines. Chrome of course even better but more expensive and likely over kill with H2 embrittlement isssue-risk. Rather more than worrisome than a little ordinary looseness would be the out of true-ness of the shafts. Check and see. Mine tend to bend twisted like candy cane not a hinge.

If you end up with too much lay shaft side play I just leave out enough gaskets to make up for it no problemo and bit more solid nip up is all. Oil sprial groove the sleeve bushes is worthwhile as no lube gets in in lower gears, nor just sitting as above oil level, so only time area gets drain down to enter it some-what is in 4th gear going pretty slow or lube just flung everywhere but inside the bush spaces.
