gearbox questions

I thought the complete clusters were interchangeable?
I know I've fitted a commando output shaft into a box that came from an atlas
Although you don't really have to do this anymore with the clutch centre adapter from rgm
I know my mates commando has a pre commando gearbox or she'll at least because it has a full width top mount and an earlier number
I have an AMC Matchless close ratio box in bits in the garage and was intending one day to attempt to fit the cluster into my Mk3 box. The cluster turned out to be standard Commando so I fitted the second gears to bring second nearer to first. Is it possible the close ratio cluster went into a Commando box?

I think the gears may be interchangeable as a set, but not as individual gears.
I recall seeing a list with all the different types and associated ID stamped on them, but it was a long time ago.
Note I said AJS & Matchless, not Norton ;)
You probably mean "not Commando". In the Plumstead factory, AMC machined gearbox housings, covers and gears, assembled the gearboxes, and ferried gearboxes and cassettes specific to the Dominator and Jubllee/Navigator models to Birmingham for integration.
As far as I know, the gear cluster used for Dominator models (88, 99, 650 Supersport, Atlas) was identical to the cluster used in contemporary AJS/M roadster models, including Norton-badged hybrids.

The gear cluster for Commando models underwent some redesigns during the production run. Part of the change was to strengthen the gears by altering the tooth profile. First alterations happened in 1968 while Commando production took place in the Plumstead works.
I don't think it's advisable to fit a pre-Commando gear cluster in a Commando gearbox shell for use in a Commando bike.
