We have ways of making them oil tight, tho it does take some effort and investigation. The biggest improvement comes from using low expansion pistons and chrome compression rings. When properly seated, this combo results in more power, longer top end life and much less oil consumption. There is little blowby and less crankcase pressure, or in some situations, slightly negative crankcase pressure. The crankcase pressure reduction gets rid of a whole host of little leaks/seeps.
The other big improvement is to add a valve seal to the intake valves.
These two changes combined can get you 1600 miles down the road on an 8 oz. cup of oil, a far cry from the factory spec of 160 fluid oz per 1500 miles!
The engine stays clean, the rear wheel is not wet with oil anymore, a big improvement.

I've heard of Vincents getting modified crankcase breathers. Certainly not the only old Brit engine with room for improvement there.
Thats correct, Kemps sell an "Elephant Tunk" breather for Vincents. It is as attractive as its name implies, tho it apparently works well.
The internal cure (low expansion pistons and valve seals) is a bit more expensive and more involved, but definitely is a more elegant solution.

They seem to. The really old style pistons were not even Cam ground. in fact some GPM pistons that were supplied as recently as 10 years ago were not cam ground. With cam ground low expansion pistons, the skirt clearance can be kept to .003 vs .007 for the old Specialloids (street) .010 (racing)
With the Low e cam ground pistons the racers are getting by at .0035, so this makes a huge difference in oil consumption.
I suppose it's the cam grinding that makes the biggest difference., but low e also helps.
