Torque Wrench Question.

I've changed my counter shaft sprocket and I'm now ready to torque up the sprocket nut which is left hand thread - and it's here that I realized that although my TW can indeed tighten a left hander it doesn't in fact measure torque that way, only right handed threads.

I've done a search online and come up with some conflicting wording about what will do LH and RH threads.

For example, this is described as being a 'reversible ratchet spanner', but further down in the description it quotes 'Applies specific torque to right-hand threaded screw connections.' - it also looks very much the same as mine...
Another one is decribed as a 'Bi-direction ratchet', but doesn't confirm it will measure torque in both counter clockwise and clockwise...

I dug out my old Halfords TW which does both threads by way of pressing the drive pin through to the other side, unfortunately it max's out at 50ft/lb and this nut requires an 80ft/lb torque. I could tighten it to 50 and add more, but I'd sleep easier knowing it was right.

So, any recommendations?

Indeed, the wrench must say that it measures in both directions. Mine is supposedly 1% accurate right and 10% left.

I never worry about the torque on those, I tighten, see if the retainer will align, and if close tighten until it will. If it won't take the sprocket off, turn to the next spline and try again. Once you're around 40-50 ft lb, it is plenty tight enough with the retainer on, IMHO.

Also, the threads are fine, interrupted, and not deep. It REALLY sucks if you overtighten and spin the nut on the threads - been there, done that, hated life!

Aah thank you for those words of wisdom, Greg. I know you've put together one or two of these machines, so that has set my mind at rest and as you say, the lockwasher/retainer is there as a back-up.

Sweet. Cheers 🍻
