Tool to remove front sprocket

PeterJoe, those sockets look like they would be used for the fork top nuts.

Seems doubtful being thin aluminum they could withstand the twisting torque of installing/taking off the front
drive chain sprocket nut


regardless, and I am replying for Tom the original poster, we now have the old 19 off and new 20 on properly

I took a 1-1/2' deep socket and cut it in half (Pep Boys <$10.00) then welded in a piece of black pipe I had in the garage. Made it deep enough to fit over the shaft. It also works on the large drain plug on my MKIII.

If you choose this option, be sure to grind 1/8" of the face of the socket to remove the lead in taper on the hex. Then a quick chamfer around the O.D. of the face ensures full engagement on the hex of the thin nut surrounded by a concave sprocket.
About 10 mins on your bench grinder. :mrgreen:

That's something I have been wanting to do, but every time I pull out my chop saw I forget. Hopefully next time..................
