Tires for my 69 Commando

Forgot to ask who supplied the rims. I'm having some trouble finding rims wider that wm3. Central wheel has some coming in from Spain (Morad) but they could be months away. Devon wheel doesn't keep anything wider than wm3.
That leaves Buchanans, but the cost is considerably higher.

Thanks
Glen

I used Sun rims from Buchanans. They're not cheap, but what is anymore.

Avon does not recommend the 100/90 for WM2/1.85" rims....I did not know this and mounted one, it works OK but the profile is definitely too pinched as pictured below. They do sell the AM26 in 3.25 universal and 90/90 front which they say are OK on a WM2

Odd that, here is an email from Avon technical department.

Hi John,

Our recommended fitment for a 1975 850 Commando using Roadriders is 100/90-19 front and rear. As you have a none standard rear wheel, we can't officially recommend a fitment as we have not tested. But a 110/90-18 will fit a 2.5" rim and is 7mm wider than our 100/90-19. You can use a front or universal tyre on the front. Hope this helps

Interesting. What makes them think you had a non standard rear wheel? Did the 75 850 Commando have WM3 rims?

LoL, More confusion.

Peter

If it's a 2.5 " that is WM 4. Wm3 is 2.15.

Just to add a little more confusion, I had a look at the Bridgestone fitment chart for the BT45 tires like Snortin has. Bridgestone lists tube type and tubeless. According to the chart, the 120/90/18 is tubeless.
Not sure if it is ok to run a TL tire with a tube, but it seems they are making some kind of separation of type here. The 400x 18 is TT and has just a slightly lower load rating.

Typically the difference between the TL and TT is the bead. The TL will be more difficult to install (if you do it by hand). Otherwise I believe they are the same.

That would do it I guess :D

So, what rim do you have on the rear is it a (guessing) WM3 18 maybe......

Peter

Hi
I told him it is 2.15 (wm3) which confused me as he is talking about a 2.5 (wm4) so still not sure which to fit, 110/90x18 or 100/90x18 maybe have to email him again.
Cheers

John, according to the Avon chart, which might be more reliable than the techy, you could use either on a WM3. Also, for the WM3, they have a 4.00x 18 rear which has a higher load range, should you want to carry a passenger and touring gear.
This is the setup Im going with on my touring bike, just ordered the rims this am. I was tempted to go even wider (120) which meant going to at least a wm 4, but careful measuring showed it wouldn't fit.
The wider rims would have been from Buchanans, same as Snortins, but the 2.15 can be had in the UK at Central Wheel or Devon. A friend has Devons and they are lovely. Price is quite good as well, although Central was marginally lower. Buchanans was about three hundred higher for the two rims.

I have put more miles on a 120 rear on a WM3 rim than any other and is my favorite profile pinching so far. Next Peel has 130 fitted to WM3 rim. Its been done a long time before me too and nothing bad happens to tire or bike handling, nay seemed more secure on edge before trying to busting it loose with extra power and lean. Wear is likely better on flatter spread patch profile of course.

Thanks Glen,
the rims I have are Akront unflanged. I think I will go with the 110/90-18 as I only ride solo, SWMBO does not like the cold and finds it boring! Women!
