Those fancy billet petcocks (FAIL)

I installed my BAP petcocks two years ago, purchased from OB. The pair are symmetric, both levers pointing forward when closed, and up when full on. Other than being the least attractive of the petcocks available, they perform flawlessly. Both flow at greater than 20 fluid oz/minute, more than twice the rate needed by a 60 HP engine. They are resistant to careful fettling (the fuel lines have been attached/detached more than a dozen times). They have never leaked.

Im suspecting that maybe we have a different manufacturer out there. I have bought 8 of them from BBC, 2 sets for myself, and 2 sets as gifts for others. No one has experienced what you have gone through. You are absolutely right, with a high priced item like this, they should install and work perfectly.

no probs with mine either

I was going to order a set from Jim knoll (British Parts) but I saw that Steadfast had them and since I was working by thier shop at the time I just went in & bought a set. I guess the main guy was gone and the girl who was there could only find a set that take 5/16" push on hose so I bought those. I wanted the threaded kind but she couldn't find them. I went and got 5/16 ID Tygon line and so far so good. I wonder if only people who got them from Steadfast have had trouble with them then perhaps they 2nds or made by some one else?? Also on mine when mounted one knob turns clockwise & the other anticlockwise, are the ones from BBC like that too???

Mine are like that also (clockwise/anticlockwise); with mine, both ends are threaded. They are expensive but they work very well and are good looking!

you can get them either way. if you want to use push on hose and are running a mikuni, you can get the 90 degree fitting that threads on to the valve. looks good too.

Hey Johnny -

What was the final outcome on this? Were the threads on the replacements tight too? What's da story?

Russ

Well, I sent them back to Steadfast cycles. They were very nice and said that they would swap them out for me. I sent the broken ones via UPS to them and they acknowledged having recieved them. I asked them if they could guarantee that the threads on the replacement set would be correct.... they said no. They then asked me if I would prefer a refund or a replacement set. -I opted for the refund.

I am still waiting for the refund.

As far as petcocks go. I went to my local Brit Cycle shop, Donelson Cycles in St. Louis and bought British made petcocks. (I think they are the same that Old Britts sells.) They fit perfectly and work great. Great fuel flow and keep the stock appearance. Donelson was a Norton Dealer back in the 60s and 70s and are a great resource for Norton info.

Here's a really cool bit of information......

I just moved to a new house last month. My new nextdoor neighbor turns out to be the Service Manager from Donelson Cycles!!! He has been there for 40 years. And to make matters even more bizzare, as it turns out, I work with his wife!!! Her office is nextdoor to mine on the same hallway!!!!!!!!
