@jimbo

It is hard to tell if there is an adapter fitting. It looks like a very clean installation. Did you have any interference getting the fuel screen thru the adapter?

The fuel screen won’t fit through the adapter. I drilled out the bore of the adapter male end so the screen slipped in and cemented in place.

@ Steves

Thanks. It is good to know it is do-able. What cement did you use? Ethanol proof?

I have rebuilt my Ewarts tap with a Teflon "cork". The modified Ewarts works well but weeps gas (a few drops overnight) if I close the tap but remove the fuel nipple. Not a problem if the needle and seat are sealing well.

If it does become a problem, my next move is a Pingel plus adapter.

I believe I used Teflon tape.

Nice photo.
How did the factory orient them? Double up on fiber washers, or some kind of pipe tape/ sealing compound?
Factory just tightened them until they didn't leak. It left the lever in a strange place usually. There were some fiber washers on them, I got it second hand, so it may have been situated right from the factory, I don't know.

I couldnt get my petcocks to seal with a dowty washer or a paper washer until I used teflon tape on the threads. Bingo.

On the Scott I worked on I machined thicker copper washers until the petcocks were in the right spot after tightening.

I had bought two (RH and LH) from this guy , will see if they last longer , at far some of my Cdo have BAP with no problems, but the Ewarts copy either UK made or not are crap but one pair (for how long ??)........

I'm pretty sure they are OMG taps. OMG are a long established Italian brand who supplied taps to many Italian manufacturers (http://www.omgitalia.com/en/). I replaced my Yamaha vacuum operated taps with OMG. Very good quality.

They also do a vertical outlet type..

I agree about the Ewarts taps. Time has passed them on.

Cheers,

I got tired of unreliable petcocks a long time ago. The petcock style below lasts forever. If it starts to leak you just tighten up the nut on the shaft. You can get them right angle and with the pipe threads of your choice (seal threads with teflon tape) and screw on a barb, add an inline filter. One of these petcocks will flow enough fuel for both carbs.

Hi Jim,
What brand/source and how many turns to get enough fuel flow?

Ed

It looks like a Weatherhead brand fitting. Almost looks like ones used on "Swamp Coolers" back in Arizona. Swamp Coolers = evaporative coolers for the people who couldn't afford AC.

I just installed a set of BAP petcocks I got from the Bonneville Shop. I have a question, how fast should one of these taps fill a pint jar? I know and understand that the fuel flow will depend on how much head pressure there is. A full Interstate tank will have higher head pressure than a Roadster or Hi-Rider but it seems that the fuel is coming out rather slowly.
Going by CNW next week so I will get a set of taps from Matt then. But I am curious about the fuel flow.

Just a personal thing, but IMHO valves from boilers and AC units etc belong on boilers and AC units. I prefer my motorcycle fuel taps to be, well, motorcycle fuel taps.

As I say, only IMHO.

I have these taps from this supplier & for ten years they have been perfect. I think they are the same Pioli type sold by CNW.

Then you are the market for inferior overpriced parts.

Hitchcocks’ Enfield suppliers actually mark nylon sphere domestic heating valves up, to sell them at motorcycle parts price levels.

Look- they’ve stuck a gauze on it, so you can still enjoy blockage-induced roadside breakdowns.

The Pingels are nice but pricey units. They were designed to give enough flow for Harley xr750 flat trackers that were eating fuel faster than standard taps could supply it.
I used them on the 1360 as I wanted to make sure it got what it needed.
I don't think that high flow of the Pingels is needed on a Commando.
If you leave the tank dry over winter, the Pingels will eat their Orings when you turn them on in the spring.
Leave fuel in and they are fine.
One nice feature is the on/off/reserve feature on at least one tap. Pingel offers this option.
It's getting harder to find taps of that type.
Most seem to fit a regular tap with riser on side then a reserve type tap on the other side, the reserve type draining right down.
This isn't always ideal, especially if you like to run with both taps open. There goes the reserve!
