I don't know the reason for the box section but my quess is added capacity and a slosh box or baffle area to keep oil at the supply during braking and cornering.

Very educational photo's to me, glad I didn't know how Dreer did his before I did OIF Peel. I know one reason he put boxed section right there, Main reason is the factory welds are not completed and air comes and goes there, so why not oil?
I used cold welding Iron Putty stuffed in seams to seal. Dreer did it by hot weld.
2nd reason is box flats give easier install of fittings and a tad more oil volume.

Hose between manifold will act more as oil drain for big bores than a breather since its hooked back to inside pressure volume via TS case via TS vent-drain holes via lifter channels and up or out as the pressure may direct.

Braking will flood front 'vent' tube', so will doing much of a down hill position.
I think I've solved that, but ain't tested to know for sure yet.

I checked on those shocks and I heard back from them today, $830.00 (U.S) shipped to Texas for the Classics for the Commando.

After working on my frame, I now know why Kenny Dreer made that little box under the main spine tube, first and foremost, it is the easiest way to cut the tube that runs inside the main spine and second it provides a low point with side outlets for the drain and the feed to the engine. Kenny is probably putting regular oil tanks back in those bikes because the oil capacity is not enough for hard running bikes like his were meant to be.

Well for one, it is easier to clean the insides of the main spine, some guys put that argument forwards and it made sense so I removed it. The main spine tube is 14ga or 0.076" thick.
