How many temperature sensors are there? I read about the one in the air box that can get wet during washing. Someone here also mentioned there is one for the cylinder head. Is there another?

I ask because this afternoon my 961 refused to warm up properly and idle. It's very puzzling since I took a short ride yesterday under the same weather conditions, dry with an ambient temperature of 50 to 55° F, and had no issues at all. After about 4 attempts to start it up and get it to idle, I gave up because the battery was drained. :( And of course, I was on my way to work so I had no time to check anything. I am just wondering if a temperature sensor could have vibrated loose.

Any suggestions for where to look? :?

Thanks in advance,
Peter

The head temp sensor is very delicate and easy to break -- which would cause problems like this. Gently wiggle it, if its loose, then 90% chance it's been hit or twisted and not functioning. If it is a good one, and you twist it with your fingers it will break the little wire inside.

Ah ha. I'll carefully check it. Maybe it's just the wire lead?

Could be..... but the reality is, if it was knocked or twisted, its an internal wire in the sensor that cannot be fixed.

when bike is cold, like over night, hasn't ran for 8 hrs cold, pull the plug on the head temp. sensor and check the resistance with an ohms meter across both connections. ( DO NOT REMOVE SENSOR FROM CYL HEAD) write down the resistance on the meter. Plug it back in, Start the bike and let idle for about 5 minutes. Or ride around the block. Then check again. If the resistance is lower than what you wrote down - the sensor is GOOD. IF it's the same as what you wrote cold, replace sensor.

Hope this helps. For everyone else, these are super delicate, a cleaning brush can knock the plug hard enough to break the wire. So be careful.

Hello.
I had the same problem the other week and it was a breather pipe that came off, located at the back of the engine between the throttle body's there is a sensor which I believe is to do with the idling, the pipe is the thickness of your little finger and is located on top of the sensor. Pushed it back on and cable tied it, job done. Made sure every other pipe was clipped or cable tied.
Hope that help's

Thanks guys! I am anxious to check it out as the weather is going to be warm all weekend.

This time of year the temperature drops down below freezing no matter how warm it gets during the day. I always have it on a charger and just amazes me that the battery is only good for 3 or 4 start attempts. It's not worth trying after that.

Yesterday afternoon got up into the 60s again. I had planned to take the Triumph out for a jaunt, but I figured I might as well take a little time to look the 961 over before heading out. Nothing looked out of place and the battery had been on maintenance since Monday when I drained the thing after too many presses of the start button. It was all too tempting to try again so I did. Sunovagun - she started up, stayed at 2K for about 30 seconds and then dropped to a steady idle after that. Like the fiasco from several days back had never happened! I shut 'er down after about 4 minutes, rolled 'er out of the shed and got my gear together for a ride. Ten minutes later I saddled up and pressed the start button again. She turned over easily and settled into an idle immediately. So I took her out and did my best to rack up 100 more miles.

At this point I can't say what the problem was earlier in the week. :? Now that she's gone over 800 miles I might just put her away and get the space ready for the re-torquing the head. With the tank off I might as well replace the coil, wires and plugs with the good stuff I bought last year way before before she even arrived. I also have a Shorai battery to install.

Glad its working out. It's amazing how much changing the rims makes the bike look different. I love the look of your bike. My dad has the exact same RED sport but with the aluminum spoke and you would swear there was a lot more different but it's just the wheels....

Yes, I am glad I made that last minute change. I originally ordered the black spoke wheels, but either MCC or Norton screwed up and shipped the bike with standard rims. At that point I asked if I could swap them out for the BST rims and I am very happy with them.

Are there any temperature readings on the Commando digital display. I didn't find any on the Dominator.

My bike has been idling at 1400-1600 when hot after changing to the iridium plugs. I did really give it a thrashing yesterday. Probably a coincidence and caused by something else. If that's the least of my problems, for now, I'll take it.

Did you already try to reduce idling rpm a bit?
What is the normal idling rpm now?

To add to all this;
Clean airbox temp sensor with alcohol. If oil from airbox issue is on it then false readings. Take out air filter look inside up top.

Raphi.

I did not mess with the idle settings yet. Normal now is 1250rpm, before the iridium and it was slightly below 1200. Maybe 1100-1150. Also, its a little quirkier than it was before my accident. I need to ask my dealership if the retuned the ecu with map 77 or 91. 77 does not work well and 91 works perfectly with the SBN pipes. It wouldn't be the first time they did that to me.

Yes agreed on 3 tries to start and game over so I’ve fitted heavy wires to the battery ( now a lithium ion type ) and I’ve got a motorsport jump lead push on connector system which has power from a slave jump battery , great for cold starts as motor really spins over
Also I’ve read to not touch throttle when starting and to leave alone for 10 secs to allow fuelling to stabilise its mixture control
Like most 916 bikes mine sounds better after 5 mins fast idling when it’s a warmer engine , all sensors and fuel injectors are Bosch make
