I installed a Dave Taylor head steady on my bike years ago and being frugal (cheap) I bought the kit without the spring setup. Anyone know if the parts can be had separately? Are the MK 3 spring and associated parts the same? I don't know how much of a difference it might make but I would like to try it.

The individual stainless steel suspensory spring parts are available from RGM although non-stainless parts are standard 850 Mk3.

I got my spring setup separately from the actual HS. Think I sourced it from a US supllier....Classic British Spares or EuroJumbalya.

EDIT: EuroTrash Jumbalya:

While on DT steady topic, have others found vibrations to increase with it compared to stock rubber bobbin setup?

Also remember not to drill the hole in the centre of the head steady if its not pre drilled, the engine is offset to one side so the hole needs drilling offset too.

It's the same part whether supplied with or without the suspensory spring so the (2) tapped holes should be there in MikeG's Taylor head steady.

Can i ask why there are two versions of the head steady... without stating the obvious what is the reasoning on the spring??

I have installed the spring on my Mk2A and would thoroughly recommend it.
Using AN's drawing you will need parts 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9.
4 & 5 can be eliminated if you use bolts to fix part 2 to your alloy base plate - if not you'll have to install studs.
Cheers

I run the spring set-up with my Comstock head steady thinking it would take some load of the front iso.Don’t know if this is real but it can’t hurt as I already had the parts and it fits nicely.Like RobSS I would also recommend it
Mike.

I’ve set two of these up and both times I’ve had to go to the forward clip on the top mount to get proper tension. Is this normal?

The same for my Mk3. Standard box section or Taylor head steady.

If the head steady on your motorcycle affects it's handling, rather than fix it, you might do better to fit a new horn.

One more question then. Anyone know the bolt size/pitch of the bolts that hold the trunion holder to the Taylor head steady? It's 1/4 inch but neither 20 or 28 TPI threads in. Don't know if it's because the holes have been open for years and corroded or if it's a non US thread.

I started in the rear position but changed to the front after a few months.
It gave a freer sliding front iso stud (when loose:rolleyes:!) but could not determine any difference in riding.
I have left it in the forward position
Fitting the spring is a change I would definitely do again (with hindsight)
Cheers
