TAB II Alloy Tank #3

Hi Steve , Where are you getting your throttle wheel cover from ? I would like one like that. Is Cliffa making them ?
Yes Tony, as Voodoo has replied.

Nicely made too. Two quite strong magnets inset to the rear hold it in position. I think Cliff does a couple of designs.

I’ll put pics up of both sides when I get back. Travelling currently - forgot how much I dislike airports:rolleyes:!

thanks Steve , I will post when i put mine on .

No doubt the pseudo-Monza would seal better BT, for those that want the look without the hassle - the net is full of tales of leaking traditional Monza Caps.

Don’t think it would be of interest to TAB though (or me for that matter) as they pride themselves on producing truly authentic product, using traditional methods.

That said, I’m gonna fit a non-authentic tank strap at some stage - cos I like the look and ya gotta protect the tank from the dreaded zipper. This beauty would scratch with the passing glance of a partly inflated condom.

Used to think the silver tank on black bike looked disjointed. Not now - it has grooooown on me big time! Lovin the appearance although it’s made it even more difficult to get away from biker haunts😁!
Hi Steve , Is the gas cap leak finally resolved ? If not , send it back to TAB and this time when its fixed or replaced they will test it .

Hey Tony,

Main leak to the weld is resolved, but I’m travelling currently. New cap from TAB is sat in my postbox. I’ll fit it when I get back and see where the land lies. Not overly concerned - I’ll get it sorted one way or the other.

Dom from the Repair shop tv program, has a YT channel where he recently visited TAB2 to get a tank made...

That’s bloody brilliant, thanks for posting! 30 hours of work puts the price of a tank in perspective, and looking at how complex the 961 tank is in comparison, they are a bargain.

Now I need to catch up on Dom’s channel.

Proper craftsman at TAB no doubt - great product. Just goes to show I suppose that despite that level of craftsmanship, ‘that tank’ can slip through, like ‘that bike’ I guess! No biggie!

Fitted the new cap from TAB and went for a 100 Km loop this morning. My leaks are fixed in all but situations where the tank is (almost) topped off and I attack right handers. Pretty certain that this is as a result of fuel exiting directly through the vent hole, exacerbated by the positioning of my cap to the RH side - perfect to receive the fuel wash.

Mk 1 inner cap to prevent wash was made from part of a tea strainer, how else would an Englishman fix his British bike! 🧐 Mk II will have far less holes and should stop all leaking.

Thank‘s for the offer of a machined inner cap/plug Cliff, but there is no room for that. There is only sufficient room to receive a sheet metal item, which itself is contacted by the cap centre spigot when closed - holding it in position.

The guys at TAB have been very helpful throughout. Highly recommended.

So, a bit of information for those looking to have decals produced for their TAB tank. My plan was to have my chosen scheme produced as a decal, so I could run it for a while to make sure it worked before getting it painted.

The decal firm I hired produce great stuff, although mainly for dirt bikes - they came recommended. However, they had the following issues:

- they initially had difficulty getting a smooth set of curves; I could see the vector points.
- eventually got a relatively smooth set of curves but had difficulty where the pinstripes intersect to a point. Before correcting this;
- they did a dry run with a test decal and could not get the decal to adopt the steep curve toward the front of the Norton tank, without creasing. Despite using heat etc.

Got a call this morning to say they couldn’t complete the task - C’est la vie!

I have the AI & PSD files so I’m gonna try and complete the graphic myself and find a local wrapping firm. They should have no problem with a wrap rather than a much thicker decal.

Failing that (and eventually anyway) I’ll get it painted. Until then I put the logo decal on - looks just OK to me.

The takeaway then - choose your decal firm well. Ideally they would have experience doing a wider variety of jobs, beyond the flat profile stuff prevalent on dirt bikes. Challenge them from the outset on whether they can apply your chosen decal to the significant curved profile present at the front of the TAB tank.

When I’ve finished the decals I’ll put the files on the resources page should anyone want to use them.

As detailed above, decals are now in the resources area.

Feel free to use if you are looking at options for your ally tank.

I was unable to get the decal/graphics firm I used to finish off the intersection point of the pinstripes to my satisfaction - to accurately reflect the original. Shouldn’t be a difficult task for any other decal firm before printing.

I think your black Norton tank decal looks great. Is the Commando 961 on the airbox white or gold ? I don't think you need to change anything the bare alloy tank with black Norton is nice .

Hey Tony,

Thanks - agreed. Previously I was in the camp that thought the silver tank on the black bike looked disjointed and couldn’t see otherwise.

Getting these decals produced took way (way) too long but gave me time to get used to just the ‘Norton’ tank decal. I now prefer it - go figure:rolleyes:! I may fit these eventually to see how they look - hopefully someone will get use from them. The detail on the airbox is gold, just a trick of the light.

If I ever get around to fitting the Thruxton fairing, that will likely mean (partially) painting the tank to make it work. Like the Thruxton Chrome below, I don’t think the ally tank works with a black colour matched fairing - back to being disjointed again! DOH!! 🙃

Just posting this again : There is a usable volume of 4.0 US Gallons in the Tab II Norton Aluminum gas tank. This is an improved range of a half gallon over the plastic tank . I have proven this multiple times on my bike . The tank holds approximately 4.4 US Gallons. At the filling station after a long trip :

Can Tab supply/fit these before shipping? Would save me a job if possible.
Supply not fit from memory Kev - they source the decals from Image Works.

There are references in the paperwork you will receive with the tank that advise fitting the tank and checking for leaks before painting (or fitting decals). There’s also a ‘catch all’ reference to Monza Caps routinely leaking if overfilled etc - can’t remember the exact wording.

Worth checking for leaks before fitting the decals. Mine leaked - sorted now.

👍 👍

Interstate still has 2.3 (US) gallons in it at that time.
Cheers

Amazing - thank you. Never had a "proper" Monza cap before. My McQueen Scrambler has one but its a regular cap under the Monza flip up thing

Does anyone know if instead of the monza fuel cap, the oem type, sunken fuel cap assembly can be used? I was going to contact Tab about this but maybe some one has already asked?
Thanks
