TAB II Alloy Tank #3

Bikerbore , Sweet tank and paint job ! I didn't know you had a MK2 , I thought you had a older 961 . I also ordered a TAB2 tank ! So will mine be TAB II tank #4 ? I don't understand why they don't sell more of these .

Dude, looks truly beautiful.
Especially, with the correct long silencers!:p
How do you plan to protect the decal in the region where your legs brush the tank side?

It could well be #4. I ordered mine at the start of March. They said the have a few orders!

Will see how it goes regarding my legs touching the tank. Only seem to ride it in jeans and the way I potter about on it, I don't grip the tank with my knees.

Here is TAB II tank number 3.

I've had decals added by Image Works, Ilkeston, UK. so it blends in with the Manx colours. I also had the filler cap moved to the centre, personal preference :)

Really pleased with the results.

Big question for you , How many liters does it hold ?

That one I'll have to wait to answer as I got a second hand fuel pump for this tank so I can swap back and forth if I fancy a change. Just running the fuel down now so I can check if the reserve light works.

Hey BB, we’ve been chatting across on FB about this stunning tank. It really does work beutifully with the silver bike - could’nt be better IMO. A little more difficult for we black bike owners. I’m still pondering painting elements of the polished tank black (inside the bounds of the pinstripe) and elements of the tail unit silver (possibly). Gonna fit the provided decals first and run it for a few months before I make any decision. Not sure I’d be happy with stick on decals in the long term.

I’m lovin’ the central Monza cap too. Think mine is being made already though so probably too late to change. They orinally said 10 weeks, my order went in 11 weeks ago and no sign yet. My sense through, communicating with TAB, is that they have taken quite a lot of orders. The below extract from initial emails.

What this says to me is that there may be enough bikes out there to warrant some aftermarket manufacturers/suppliers catering for the 961. Those that could afford the 961 can probably also afford to accessorise.

Your bike looks ‘the dogs bollocks’ mate! Congrats.

To be honest we’re surprised ourselves at the stir this has caused – we didn’t expect such a strong reaction! But we have always liked to work with Norton bikes – they’re kind of the ultimate Cafe Racer bike.

Absolutely fabulous if I ever change tank that’s the way to go for me.

It would be quite involved but an alloy tail cover which fastens in place of the plastic top and maybe has a light assembly built in? Helicopter tape over the existing tail and foam pads to space and protect it. Or a plastic/composite with that 'chrome' paint they used on the old V4. Or a wrap? Airbox replaced with TonyA's chrome ended K&N filter setup and it all matches.... Could protect tank with helicopter tape but a decent lacquer should be fine; my paintwork is as new after 14000 miles.

Wrap would be the most practicable option I think.

An alloy tail cover is a great idea Clive but as you say, it may be pretty complex to manufacture with those sexy curves of the tail unit - It would tie into the tank perfectly though. I’m gonna start with just the tank decals supplied through TAB which mirror the original Norton ally tank, then have a look at decals, wraps and painting. Slow burn project. Keeping it reversible is a good idea though.

I just delayed mine, it was going to be finished this week but I decided that the centre filler looked right, so mine is going to another buyer and manufacture for me is delayed to July or so. I now see the filler is not much offset.
Live and learn.

Hey Skiddy,

We were obviously having the same thoughts. I contacted TAB yesterday about switching the filler to the centre. Mine is partly constructed and at the stage that it can be changed. Now I’ve done that I also noticed on Tony’s tank that the offset in not too extreme. Think I still prefer in centred now though. There will be a slight delay I am told as the welder is away riding in the TT.

Don’t really see any opportunity to save on postage Skiddy as we discussed. What do you think?

I'd decided on the centre mounted fuel cap mainly because I was intending to add the stripes. A side mounted fuel cap wouldn't look right to me. It would upset my OCD

Also I think the side mounted cap harks back to the days when tanks had a central strap with the 961 doesn't. Also mentioned is that you can get more fuel in the tank, but by 961 is so upright on the sidestand, I'd get no benefit

Makes perfect sense in your case.
Now, can TAB develop a custom strap version of their tank?
