In light of the other tank thread on Singh precisions, thought I would share a good news story about tank fabrication...

After multiple moves mandated by the U.S. Navy, I'm finally getting around to putting my Norton back on the road after it went down. The alloy tank was damaged and needed replacement. My old tank was a Manx style supplied by RGM. It had no baffles, a separate breather, and the glue around the filler neck partly dissolved causing the tank to leak when more than 2/3 full. Price was decent but I wasn't happy overall.

After putting in orders with a few fabricators that either had poor communication or never completed the project, I finally was able to make good headway with Richard Phelps at Tab 2 Classics.

Communication was very prompt. I was promised a 6 week production time, and put in my order in early April. Tank is complete and ready for shipment, so they hit the mark on the dot. Payment due upon completion but prior to shipment. Tank has baffles and an integrated breather in the cap. Cap is epoxied in and not welded, but Richard promises no leaks so fingers crossed.

For a slimmer look I ordered a Lyta style tank with no clip on indents, in the same pattern used on this bike on the NYC Norton site:

Pictures of the completed tank follow. It will be several weeks before I can see it in person (not due to shipment, due to my personal schedule). Pictures look great but of course tank in hand will tell the truth. Richard also works with a local decal manurfacturer and was able to supply lettering at a very reasonable price.

Cheers, Will

Price he's currently posting on the website is 415 pounds for that tank... shipping to U.S. is dear at 110 pounds, but also don't have to pay the VAT.

Re: Alloy Tanks - Tab II Classic

The last price I heard about from our local fella at Kinglake Victoria for similar, was about $600. However that was about 8 years ago, and I don't know if he is back in operation after our bushfires a while back. Thanks for that - interesting.

The Tab II tank looks very nice and the company seems much more legitimate than the stuff coming out of India. I haven't heard anything good about hand made tanks coming from that country. They may be less money up front but the tank is not an item to skimp on IMHO. And to be perfectly honest I'd really like to see the India / alloy tank thread go away. It's been a year now. Seriously, Stop posting to that ridiculous thread and giving the guy a platform to profit.

I also have one of Madass's tanks. Very nice I would highly recommend one. Plus Don is an real pleasure to deal with.

Caps are epoxied in place?
Is that the normal procedure?

Yes it is. Welding heat causes distortion, especially on something as delicate as the quick release cap with it's spring and latch.
The filler riser tube gets welded in, then the cap assembly , which should be a slide fit over the filler riser, is epoxied to that.

Long overdue shot of the Tab II tank I promised, which looks great. Bike is in the hands of a friend right now until the Navy moves me back to Jacksonville at the end of the month... Sidecovers and lettering still a work in progress.

Beautiful looking tank. My Brothers 750 is with Kenny at NYC Norton right now, it's been there for well over a year now. Some beautiful things come out of the shop but patience and $ seem to be required. But the bike didn't have required timlines to start and of course snowballed as they all do. Maybe this Xmas it will finally be done. I'm not sure who does Kennys tanks.

Maybe someone should reveal to the tank building fraternity the obviously well kept secret that the filler caps come with an internal thread .....

welding in the male riser , which if is of inferior wall thickness (India) will distort. Maybe thats why they make the thread very sloppy .
just maybe .

If you read the OP's first post you will see that he was a bit surprised to see the fuel cap attached with epoxy rather than weld, so with that in mind perhaps my response doesn't seem quite as stupid?

Not necessarily surprised... but the cap on my last tank (supplied by RGM) was glued in and leaked, so I was looking for alternatives.

I have a madass tank... Never used, the alloy side covers to match and a set he supplied I'd like to sell... My project changed directions and I no longer need the set....and yes this stuff is,well... Elegant ! Beautiful work !! I'll let the complete set go for a reasonable offer,I'd prefer to sell the entire kit as a "set" but will consider separating it,let me
Know if anyone wants this stuff....save a shitload of cash if shipping in the USA

A source of beautiful tanks and other alloy components can be found at this site - I have no experience with them just like looking at their wares.

Check out the "Hobby Holidays" link on his site. I tell you that sounds like a good holiday to me! Although I also find the other options at 50-100,000 quid interesting but far out of reach for most anyone...

I have heard his tanks are very nice, I believe I approached him as well as Wilcox to make a tank for my Paul Smart but the prices were extremely high and a bike was required for figment. Growing up as a teen this is the work I wanted to do but more so for race car and sports car bodies. I listened to my Dad a machinist and went to college instead, I'm sure I'm better off but sometimes think I should have followed my metal working skills through fruition. You can't rewind!
