I shimmed the layshaft in a MK3 to approx .008. The shifting is a little stiff now. I can still pull/push the ks lever back and forth so I know there is still some clearance in the layshaft. The shifting is very positive but requires more foot pressure than before. Several possibilities.
The crossover shaft could be binding. solution= install second gasket and see what happens.
Try another gasket between the outer ond inner gb covers.
Try another gasket between the inner cover and the gb.
something needs some clearance somewhere. The shimming is the first suspect. Anybody run into this?

Or.....maybe a bent gearbox shaft somewhere.....you did check them both between centres and total runout in a lathe chuck before assembling?

I solved the problem. By reaching between the motor plates and trying to move the crossover shaft I could feel no movement whatsoever. So I installed a second primary gasket and the shifting returned to normal. Somewhere I lost a few thousandths when I put the gearbox back together so the crossover shaft was bottoming in the primary cover. All is working well now. I could also grind off approx .030 from the end of the shaft to accomplish the same thing. I have noticed several MK3s and left hand shift Triumphs being more difficult to shift than their right hand cousins, from now on this is the first thing to check.
