I'm replacing the steering bearings on a 74 MK2. There are etchings on the metal rim of one side of the bearing (FAG 7205-R-2RS). Which direction should the etchings face for the top and bottom bearings?

Jumped the gun.

Either will work but best practise is to have them outwards so the next time they are revealed the next owner knows what bearing they are without having to take them out.

No matter, they are symmetrical.

6205 2RS is the standard deep groove headrace ball bearing.

"FAG 7205-R-2RS" is angular contact, in which case it does matter which way around the bearings are fitted.

Likewise, I just assumed standard bearings. The Angular Contact bearing conversion is on my list of improvements for the future. I had found them in the U.K., does anyone know of a US source?

any bearing supplier should be able to fix you up with the angular contact brg. just give the part number...
