Latest news is that all previous Norton customers who paid a deposit on their bikes will get their money back.
This news was in MCN this week.

Bit behind the curve it seems, the statement has been out for awhile now. It was always the plan, and makes sense as I doubt the bikes that could be made would differ a little from the those mocked up.

Having read the progress report, this is not the case. You can transfer your deposit to TVS motor, if you don't then you wait and see if you can get your deposit back when BDO have finished with the remains.
TVS are a happy to take over the deposits but only against a bike they may make in the future. Lucky dip anyone!!

If you don't get the bike that you originally ordered, then it's a lucky dip as you say, it seems that they are making the rules up as they go along! - in other words all b. S !

Not really. TVS have zero legal obligation to give anything to deposit holders, at least with their offer, your money might not be lost, assuming they do make bikes that people want, your deposit goes towards one of them.

I don’t see how we can knock TVS for that.

going

I agree with FE . I say don't knock TVS they may be the salvation of the Norton brand. I would want the bike I paid for and I so hope they get it going .

They paid a large sum of money, and yes they are making the rules up as they go along. Stupidly, or cleverly from what side of the fence you are on, now the progress report has been released to the public TVS control the deal and terms with BDO. I don't see BDO letting them go when the other 3 offers were nowhere the offer of that of TVS.

Better save up your money boys ! This may be your last chance to buy a new Norton 961 .

In the US maybe, but not in the UK or EU, they will be made a month too late to meet the EU and UK deadlines for Euro 5 I believe.

Euro 4 designs already in production have a 1 year extension before needing to be Euro 5 compliant. So the 961 production can carry on until Dec 2021.

Is the demand still there? I was at the dealer/importer (Brisbane Motorcycles) getting my CR serviced yesterday and they have one Dominator and four or five Commando‘s - all Mk2’s. According to one salesman there has been a little verbal, but no purchase interest. The other said that there had been no interest at all - no sales. This is with a backdrop of otherwise very strong bike sales, as many in Aus were given access to lumps of their superannuation due to the COVID situation. I got the feeling they were viewing the Norton as dead stock (or whatever the correct retail term is).

My guess is that all of the uncertainty surrounding Norton’s demise and then rebirth (to an Indian company), end of the Commando line, well documented technical difficulties and unclear spares provision may do that to any brand. Not to mention a lack of a dealer network in what is a very (very) large country! Clearly Norton were always going to be stronger in the UK than anywhere else but it still felt a little disappointing.

No matter I thought, bike serviced, Rizoma reservoirs fitted as OEM leaking and an awesome run back through the Sunshine Coast hinterland! Running beautifully!

Long live Norton.

PS. Service Manager and technician were both fully aware of what is happening with the 961 clutch failures. Technician stated that an owner would definitely hear it before any failure occurred:eek:.

Sounds like a good excuse for a 961 meet I think , Stuart 2015 has mentioned it , depending when , we could go take a butchers at the new Norton central & watch em being rolled out /picked up /finished off / ridden out.
This would surely mark “ the start of the beginning “

With all the bad news , it's no wonder ! I still think in the end the Norton 961 will be desirable and sought after .

Solihull is a nice place but I'm afraid Solar Park is not exactly Donnington Hall and it's deer park! Assuming it survives Covid we do have the National Motorcycle Museum up the road....

and if you don’t want to lose the deposit, you could buy an early model of the most attractive / affordable bike and resell it.It maybe the only choice.

I though I read that they would apply the deposit but required additional money to do with it to secure one of the first 40 to roll off the line. any left over from the first 40 would then be offered to any new or fresh customer.

Not according to latest trade regulations out this month. The bikes must have been built by the end of December if made in the EU or actually in the EU prior to the end of December. Total registrations will be limited EU wide based on past sales as well to avoid flouting. This applies to the 27 EU states only, and was introduced due to covid. The UK has not adopted this regulation the last time I heard. So, it is pre register or fudge the date of manufacture. Or seeing as we have left the EU totally ignore it.
