74 Old Britts Starter and 72 Alton Starter:

Starters

Hi, Welcome to the forum. Are you asking a question here? :?: Help us help you

If this is a question, I really like the design of the old Britts starter, no need for sprag clutches, to fail. However the cost is a lot more than the Alton starter, plus the need to get various bits machined.

Still kicking...

Most starter systems have a "one-way" or "over-run" clutch built into them somewhere, usually inside the pinion on the "pre-engaged", etc, types .

On pre-engaged starters the drive has an internal one-way clutch. This slips in one direction and locks up in the other. This is again designed to prevent the starter running with the engine as it helps to stop over-speeding, because when the ring gear is going faster the drive it slips.
