Spragg Bearing Issue?

Not sure if I have a spragg bearing issue.

The starter on my Mark 3 spins more often than not. I replaced the spragg bearing last year & there are only a few miles on it.

When newly installed I recall the starter always working, but it seemed to drift to engaging occasionally.

I noted in a recent thread that the spragg bearing may "slip" out of engagement. Whether this is true or not, how can I fix the spinning starter?

If it's a new spragg, they are much too pricey so I will skip it & just use the kick start, LOL
Cheers!

Stephen , check the ID and OD meausurements of the engine sprocket also crank gear ,if too much wear the sprag will spin . There is also a chance the overload back fire device is or has come loose . Unfortunatley you will have to open the primary in any case and check these items out Old Britts has a strip and repair procedure for this ., I can supply new sprags at $50.00 if required ,Norton Dave .

Thanks Dave,
I will likely take it apart soon. I like to have all systems "go". Thanks too for the lead on supply. They are super expensive elsewhere.

Are your sprags the same as the ones used in the Enfields?

Hi sorry I only know you as FMJ the sprags I have are not the same as Royal Endfields, they use a 14 roller similar to the old Renolds units , mine are Stieber 18 roller self alighning outer cage in a Stieber box . I have tested them extensively and are proving good value for money ,thanks for the interest . I mentioned here before but not much interest so maybe people are happy to part with hundreds of dollars for the same thing . Yes I saw the EBAY add for Endfeild sprags they look cheap , if you want the same but with 18 rollers they are $27.00each . Norton Dave .

Hi was that $50 a misprint for a sprag bearing?
Seems too good to be true but I am definitely interested

Cheers

Hi Norton Dave,

How do I get these 18 tooth sprags for $27.00? What brand/make are they?

Many Thanks

Kevin

I would be interested in the Stieber 18-roller sprag for $50.00. maybe 2. PM me as to the payment and details.

Hey.

I have been waiting to hear from you Dave. I waited for tesresultatet your sprag.
The results did not come, so I bought everything new from Andover Norton. They have the 18 rolls. It costs $ 117.
Is your stronger and better than the one they have?

Hi Lads,

Anybody heard from Dave yet?

Kevin

I remember this coming up before about a year ago, asked the same questions + sent PM's to Dave but never got a reply. Maybe it's a late April fools

I bought one recently from oldbrits. I do not remeber what I paid, but a lot more than $50. It came in an Stieber box and was an 18 sprag unit. If I can find another for $50, I'll buy it for a spare. I am sure I'll screw up another one before I get all the bugs worked out.

I bought one (Stieber DC 4127 (3C)) a few weeks ago for $78 plus tax, from a local bearing supply shop (Applied Industrial Technologies in San Marcos, CA).

It is identical (to my eyes) to the last sprag I bought from OldBritts.

The local office of Applied Industrial didn't have it in stock, and had to get shipped from their warehouse.

I found these sprags on this site, where the brand was called "Formsprag" rather than Stieber (although the product came in a Stieber box):

As i clicked around, i kept moving back and forth from warnernet.com to formsprag.com

http://www.warnernet.com/smartcat/sc_ap ... =formsprag

and if you use the http://www.formsprag.com/distributorframe.htm site you can find a local distributor.

Or just google: formsprag DC4127(3C) and see what you come up with

Good luck!

They are readily available from Kaman bearing supply. I think the last I bought were around 62.00 and 2 or 3 days out. They are Steiber parts sold by the USA distributor who is Formsprag. Jim

Or you can get one at British Italian Motorcycles in Vancouver for $200+.

After seeing the price at BIM I was pleased to get one from Norvil for 70 Gbp or so. Didnt last long though. According to the Norvil site, the inner and outer hub must be replaced when the sprag is done, I didnt do that.
Total cost to purchase the three items at Norvil is prohibitive, even when accustomed to Vincent parts prices!

Will give the Stieber/kaman route a try and if that sprag fails, will remain a kickstarter forever.

Per the Stieber GmbH Company in Heidelberg information on their freewheel type DC sprag clutches:

"to avoid premature failure of the freewheel" if using splash lubrication, the oil level should be to a depth of 30 to 50% of the inner diameter of the outer race.

Perhaps the premature failures of the sprags are due to inadequate lubrication.
