Spragg Bearing Issue?

I was wondering about that
If the oil level in the primary was too high though would this not affect the operation of the clutch?

Also
I have been considering an ES belt drive conversion for the primary but am concerned about lubrication for the components including the sprag
There does not seem to be much info around on it so it looks like more research before I take the plunge

There is no question poor lubrication is part of the reason the sprag and races wear out so quickly. Enough oil to lube the sprag would definitely make the clutch inoperable.

The sprag is designed to "lift off" as the rpm goes up so then there is no contact. I have to think low idle speed would contribute to shorter sprag life also.

Running an open sprag in a dry primary sounds like a pretty bad idea although I have not tried it myself.

I have looked at some sealed sprag assemblies that could be fit into a Norton setup with some machine work. The prices were astronomical. Jim

Stieber also mentions that grease can also be used as a lubricant--but only 30--40% of the free space of the freewheel should be grease filled---excessive grease could lead to malfunction.
Recomended grease: SHELL ALVANIA G2; MOBILE MOBILUX 2; BP ENERGREASE LS2 plus other Euro types.
Ambiant and operating temperatures would have to be included in the drop point of the grease used.
A sealed sprag would be ideal if using a belt drive.

Sprag is: Stieber DC 4127 (3C)

Hi L.A.B.,

Once again you have helped me out.

I contacted Dickson Bearings & Transmissions Ltd in Dublin & they can get the DC4127(3C) spragg bearing for 52euro inc vat etc. This is about half the price of a spragg from the Norton UK suppliers (approx £70+vat + p&p)

I'll try replacing the spragg first but if the specs of the two gears are out I'll have to dig deeper into my pockets!

All the best

Kevin

Good price-if it's the genuine Stieber item?

Probably cheaper still if bought in bulk?
Perhaps AN will take the hint and drop their sprag price a bit, as they're only acting as middle man for what is basically a bought-in item (OK, so I'm dreaming  ).

Hi L.A.B.,

I'll report back when I get the spragg if it's a Steiber, I was told over the phone it is a Steiber.

I checked the spec of the Crank gear & the Engine sprocket and both are out of spec. The Engine sprocket has a fair amount of 'bumps' around it bearing surface, so I'll also be replacing these!

More Anon.

Who amongst us has purchased one of the $27 or $50 sprags?
Is there perhaps someone who would be good enough to post a photo of same?
There has so far only been chatter and no evidence, has it all happened behind the scenes?
I'm thinking I missed it all.
All the best.

I know I'm over the other side of the pond but when I get mine I'll take some pics. Once I get the other parts I need I'll give some feedback on how it works or not as the case may be!!

Hi Lads,

Got my spragg gear & it is a Stieber, worked out approx. 52euro.

Just putting everything back together now.

Just a quick question, there's a large washer behind the rotor, on one side its slightly raised in the middle, which way does it face? does the raised side face the spragg or the rotor?

Kevin

According to the service manual, the thrust washer should be fitted into the sprocket recess "with small dia. facing outwards".

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the reply. If you look at this: http://www.oldbritts.com/1975_g12.html

I think you are referring to number 21 in the exploded view, I'm referring to number 23 which sits directly behind the rotor.

As I said one side has a slightly raised center section, for the moment I've put the raised side facing the spragg.

When you refitted the sprag did you ensure the 'sprags' were orientated the correct way? If not they will make an awful noise and wear or even break off.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I have everything bolted back together and the starter works fine, one push & whoosh it starts up, so all the ES 'bits' are working fine.

My new 'issue' is I'm sourcing a new primary cover as the original was damaged when the big bush was being fitted. Should have the new cover tomorrow or Thursday.
